capbuf,

Wish I could, but already booked for Sept 07. Hunting with a partner adds spice to a hunt and creates a great bond. It doesn't hurt that it slightly lowers the price tag as well.

Are you going to the SCI Show in Reno later this month? That would be a great place to find a partner. Good Luck

He does, and booked my side of the 2X1...it works... Ray books all my safaris and has always done right by me. I'm sure Jeff would, also.

Pierre is a good PH. Should be a great safari.

As for Jeff, that is one man I would not book with under any circumstances.

maybe a tad off topic but while you good folks are discussing booking agents, does anyone know what their take of the safari price is? ie are they getting 5, 10, 15% of the safari cost?

I know these guys dont work for free but I often wonder what their take is and what services they render for the dough.

I assume that they get their piece of the pie before sending the payment on to the outfitter/PH.

Per a guide in Alaska who used Martinell as a booking agent/outfitter - 20%.

I have often thought, if the agent's commission was not built INTO the total price, but instead ADDITIONAL to the usual safari fees, how many people would be willing to pay it?

The normal commission used to be up to 15% of daily rates, but sometimes now it also includes trophy fees and more as well. Plus the inevitable free hunts etc.

I much prefer to deal direct myself with the outfitter. Even if an agent is involved asking questions direct to the outfitter/PH also cuts out a layer of confusion and speeds evething up. I know I asked about several things on a recent hunt, was told THIS, THAT and THAT. Everything has been organised. None of it happened and certainly the PH knew nothing about any of it. So even if it was communicated to a boss of the outfitter, it never got to the PH in the field.

The lesson. Speak direct to your actual PH as much as possible.

It was my issue and it was about 6 years ago. And it was not an African hunt.

With Pierre, you are sure to get your money's worth

Mine was an Alaskan brown bear hunt. I won't go into detail on the issues (they were numerous), but Jeff is the type that will turn on you in a heartbeat and will not lift a finger to help. He takes responsibility for nothing.

On my hunt, he made $3000. He as much told me his part was over when I booked. Although he did have the guide fill out a form denying anything and everything. Case closed. I am convinced the only reason he did that was to cover his own ass. No discussion about a future hunt, no refund, no apology.

He's a pretty slick salesman. And that's about it. If he was giving away cape buffalo hunts with free transportation, I would tell him to piss off.

That was my first hunt that I booked through an agent. And it was my LAST hunt in Alaska.

I was surprised to see him booking for Pierre. Pierre has a great reputation, and it puzzled me that he would risk it associating with Jeff.

Just my opinions.
