What's your next Bolt rifle??
      #100476 - 27/03/08 10:03 AM

I always am curiousas to the uses folks put their firearms to and with deer season over here thoughts turn to other thinks--turky hunting, varmint hunting, and other hunts such as pig hunts.

I have had an itch for a 50 bolt for a while and am interested in the CZ 505 Gibbs or some other 50 cal.I wanna put a red dot on it and see how it handles the recoil--
A Griz hunt in Alaska is looking better and is an excuse for a new rifle!!

On the other hand there is that 50 BMG Robar gun--Nahh--

This is what happens when the American dollar is weak, you can't Safari, and you want to play with a new toy!!

Anyone else out there looking for a new bolt rifle??
For what purpose?? What's your fancy??

Well.....there's the .270 Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine with the G&H side mount I'm having rebored to 9.3X62R, and the BRNO 602 I'm having rebarrelled to .500 Jeffery, and the .505 Gibbs on a Granite Mountain action that Lon Paul is working on. I think that may hold me for the time being.

Wow, the 505 on a Granite Mountain action sounds like a serious plaything!!

Love to see the completed rifle--
Have you chosen the blank for the stock yet?

Just bought a Ruger M77 30.06 with a Nikon Monarch 4x12x40 AO, yesterday. I bought it from a guy that needed the money to help him out. I was just going to sale it and get my money back, but... I got to cleaning it tonight and I think I'm gonna just keep her!

A friend of mine in RSA back in the late '80's had an original M-S in 9.3x62.

I wouldn't mine if that was my next bolt rifle.

Picking up a couple of new acquisitions this arvo, with luck.

Not a bolt-rifle as such, but the one I expect to have the most fun with is a Westley Richards 'Monkey-Tail' capping breech-loader in .451 calibre. I intend to shoot it properly by making up nitrated-paper cartridges! Anyone here ever done this? Any tips or tricks?

I'll start a new thread once I get the rifle cleaned up, so as not to hijack this one.

The one bolt-rifle in the group is a Schmidt-Rubin. Hopefully I can find brass and dies to get that one shooting OK.

Something a bit different. I am planning a rifle for "sporting rifle" competition - a kind of hybrid sporter/hunter-benchrest rifle. It will be on a BAT stainless 3-lug action (although at present this would mean single shot only and I'd like 2 shot capacity). Calibre will most likely be 6.5x47 Lapua - basically a 2/3 length .308 case (along similar lines to the 6mmBR but longer). Probably a laminated varmint style stock but with the option of dropping it into a synthetic McMillan for hunting, e.g. longer range foxes and open country deer, but its primary purpose will be target shooting.

One that I will probably not make for myself, but I have done some for other people (and REALLY liked the way they came out) is a CZ 527 converted to 6.8SPC. I don’t have time to do one for myself, or the money, but if I did............................

You need a M-527 in 223. Used ones can be found for about $350
You open the bolt face up to take the 6.8 shell. It's just like opening up the bolt on a standard Mauser to fit a belted mag. But on a smaller scale.
Next you screw in a 270 (.277") barrel. Get one with a 1-12 twist if you can, but the 1-10 is fine too) Then you buy the M-527 magazine and bottom metal from CZ-USA made for the 7.62X39 shell. It feed the 6.8 fine.
Last your restock it in a nice fancy piece of walnut and slim it down to a very petite size. Install a set of Weaver #39 bases on the flats (I don't like the CZ rings because they are designed to fit men with necks like a giraffe) and set a compact 3 or 4 power scope on it. You end up with a rifle with the same ballistics as the original 257 Roberts shell but with only an 18” barrel, and it weighs only about 6.5 pound field ready.
The last one I did was for a 14 year old girl in Oregon and is a real gem. And it shoots well under 1" at 100 yds.

I really really want a 416 Taylor, I just have to find a suitable doner rifle (I belive a FN Mauser in 30.06 would work wouldn't it? Or how about a Brno ZKK 600?), Theres one that was done by Lon Paul for the guy who owns Luxus Walnut, thats my dream gun, if I can come even close, I'll be happy.

Methinks the 505 Gibbs has more resale than the Jeffery--

Just thinking about that big 50 smackin' game has me grinning!!

Now that I have possession of the 9.5X57 Mannlicher Schoenauer, I need to get it shooting. I'll have to restock it in the next year as the replacement stock is cracked & repaired. The 6.5 MS (Greek carbine conversion) is being worked on & will have a new full length carbine stock & new Brownells bolt handle and new bases & rings (Redfield copy). It will also have a red recoil pad, rust blue & oil finish.

My next bolt rifle could be a 375H&H Mauser, a 10.75X68 Mauser, a 416 Rigby Mauser or a 404 Jeffrey Mauser. I'll keep dreaming & hoping!!!

Still working on making up a 300 H&H. Bought a tang saftey Ruger M77 in 300WM from Trade-Ex to convert. Bought it as a used gun, seller claimed it was refinished. To my surprise he was wrong. It's never been shot. Can't bring myself to converting a brand new rifle,so I'll sell or trade it for something else. Leaning towards a Sako L61R or maybe a Magnum lenght M98 or derivative. Might even try the Ruger No.1 also.

What is the source for your (Redfield copy) rings and bases for your Greek carbine conversion? I have an original Redfield base and rings set on my Greek carbine conversion, but have been looking in vain for one for my 1903 carbine.

tkv000, any good GEW length Mauser is OK for a 416 Taylor. I have made several in years past.
Here's some pics of my own. I took the pics before I got the checkering done, but the rifle was about 98% finished when I took these. I didn't use fancy wood, but I love this rifle.

I like the 416 Taylor a lot because I could give my customers more gunsmithing for a given budget.
For example, if the customer had $2,000 to spend and we were making a 416 Rigby, we had to buy expensive brass, and an expensive action before I ever got to work. Most actions usable for the Rigby are either expensive to start with or are expensive before you are finished. Yes you can (and I have) made 404s and 416 Rigby's on GEW. Mausers, ( H. Selby's own 416 Rigby was made by Rigby on a Standard Mauser), but you will end up with a lot of time and effort into converting the action to feed the huge shells.
Now the 416 Taylor....... It's easy and fast to convert. So at the same budget you spend a lot less on your metal and that leaves you more to spend on wood and gunsmithing.

Anyway....my 2 cents worth.

Might get another M46 Husky 9.3x57 for a spare. Good round, but better than a .358 Winchester - 300gr. swaged .375 @ 2,170fps. Good guide rifle and for called moose, B or G bear, dear whatever.

I have a project rifle I wish to use hunting someday--

A custom Mannlicher carbine off a 98 action to be rebored to 35 Whelen from 30.06---Will add a recoil pad and probably change the scope as well

It already has a custom Shilen barrel, nice wood, custom trigger, and should make a real fun gun for stalk hunting in the woods!!

A Brno ZG-47 being rebuilt from a 30-06 to a 9,3x62. This will be a short and relatively light rifle for dog handling.

Yes, it is a stainless #5 contour Shilen.

Strange barrel for a previous owner to put on a 30.06, but there it is!!
