Bezoar Ibex

Hi,
Looks like an ibex could be in my immediate future, as I may go to Iran in November (not fixed yet) with my father. Has anyone hunted this species? What is a good representative head and what is the record?

Sorry for the delayed reply NitroX!
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to accompany my dad. A week of hunting (and passing on smaller males) led to a huge animal presenting itself at 550m which was too far away.
Fortunately, he is going back to give it another bash before the season ends. He e-mailed me today (Sunday) and will be hunting on tuesday if the snows are not too hard. Apparently the ibex have decended the slopes considerably since November.

Fingers crossed!

Turns out my old man got an ibex on the first day of the 2nd trip. He followed a huge male over a ridge with the guide who spotted it again just over the rise. A 270 broke it's neck at 235m and then of course they realised they had shot a smaller male, albeit a decent trophy.
Fortunately, he had two licences and was able to shoot a larger male the next day at 260m, from a large herd that was stalked in the snow.
I'll post pictures asap.

Congratulations to your Father. Two very fine animals and either makes a spectacular trophy. But that second one has the hooks, doesn't it. The first is well posed and makes a fine photograph with the mountain and scenery behind.

Personally I am upset he has the luck to take two!

They would make two fine pedastal mounts, one each side of a grand double doorway.

PS I hope you do one day see yourself in a similar picture.

Congratulations to your father. Would he write a short note describing the hunt? It would definitely be something that most of us would love reading.

Hi guys,
I'll pass on the kudos to my father, and try to get some more details of the hunt as he is not technologically minded....
Here is another picture, I can't see the second one.
You can see the conditions were pretty harsh, which makes him quite happy with the trophy, although the area holds much bigger heads too...

P.S. Note the animal was shot in the neck at that distance! My father is the best field shot in the family although people didn't believe me when he took an urial last year in Iran with a 300m running shot (he had wounded it already so it was a necessary risk).

Hopefully next year, I will find the time to participate in this hunt, I don't imagine dad will be able to climb the mountains forever, although he's doing ok for a 62 yr old!

Just a question here guys- being an American Id be a little scared of hunting in a place such as Iran. How do you book a hunt there- OR would you go there if you were from the States. I want to go to Africa to feel what it is like to be hunted, but that statement might be a little different in Iran? Am I correct or really off base here?

With the U.S. still imposing trade sanctions against Iran and the current nuclear negotiations (or lack thereof) between the U.S. and Iran, I don't believe travel to Iran is a good idea for any U.S. resident. I don't know the depth of the sanctions the U.S. has imposed on Iran, but for a U.S. resident to pay for services there, could well be illegal as a U.S. resident. I do not believe U.S. residents would be very welcomed in country and would probably be a prime target for any militant group.

I expect importation of trophies taken in Iran is forbidden since the 1979 coup.

Being from Europe, we don't have this problem and plenty of hunters go every year since many game animals in Iran cannot be found elsewhere.

Bezoar ibex can also be hunted in Turkey but, as Armenians we don't like to spend cash in a country that keeps a closed border with Armenia and denies murdering 1.5M Armenians in 1915.

How many inches or how big an Ibex is considered a ''GOOD ONE "?Whats the cost of a hunt in Iran ? expensive ?

Hi guys,

A good ibex would be about 44/45 inches or 120 cm of horn. The bezoar ibex is a bit smaller than the altai ibex of Mongolia or the mid-asian ibex of Kazhakstan. On the other hand, it has a more attractive cape with the black face and 'harness' (hardly visible on this particular animal).

Like all mountain hunts, bezoar ibex is quite an expensive hunt. I am interested in a Mongolian hunt for a altai/gobi ibex OR maybe go to my home country (Armenia) and shoot a bezoar ibex there.

Here are pictures from a hunt in October 2005. I shot a nice Armenian sheep in Western Iran.

As regards safety, I speak English (as I was taught) with a strong American accent. I never felt anything but welcome in Iran. Just like most overseas hunts, you can be whisked out of the city and into the hunting concession immediately OR stick around and do some sight-seeing.

I don't know if it is the climate/terrain or pure genetics, but they grow much larger than in Western Europe, with weights over 200kgs.

Other species in Iran of which Western hunters know very little:
-red deer
-Persian fallow deer (protected)
-roe deer
-asian wolf
-asian brown bear
-goitered gazelle

Of course the primary attractions are the mountain game. With 5 species of sheep and 2 ibex (sind and bezoar).

The standing record for a Sind Ibex is 56 inches.It was taken quite some time back by a woman hunter,a foriegner,I don't know the nationality.After that a local took one of 54 inches.Between 40 and 45 inches is quite common,I took a 41 incher.Also it is not so expensive here and a permit can be obtained for 5000 USD for a foreigner.
