This was taken with my 45-70 built on a Number 4 Mk 1 action and 400gn Woodleigh PPSP pills. It never walked a metre just dropped on the spot as I put one in the chest and one in the neck from 50m. Needless to say I am one happy camper!

A happy bunch, the older fella looks a dead ringer for a Yunupingu family bloke.

Looks like you have some scrubber legs up top as well.

The load was 49gn of AR2207, I may be able to get a little more in for more speed but I think the results speak for themselves so I'll leave it as is. Yeah we got a small scrubber cow as well only the older guy in the white shirt chased it down in his old Patrol and smacked with an axe. Amazing skills these guys have not very conventional but certainly effective!

49gr. H4198 is a very good load. My favourite in strong actions is a bit higher at 52.0. with about any 400gr. bullet. The velocity difference won't be very high.

That is a descent load - whatever shoots best. Should be around 2,000fps. Obviously it work well.

Jawaoyn country it is! I was going to increase the load to 51.50gn but I don't see any point given the results. I was also packing some 300gn Speer FNHP's with 61gn of AR2207 for any pigs I came across. Didn't get to test though unfortunately (or am I being greedy?). Hope to out do this guy next time as I saw a few bigger boys out there and maybe getting myself a donkey skin for a nice rug.

Nice work,

Did you do the barrel work yourself or get someone else to do it?

My mate built it as a project gun he's a gunsmith in Uralla, NSW. He built it and said 'Hey you know how you were going to build a 45-70 on a SMLE? Well I did one, do you want it?' How could I say no? Saved me the work. The only thing is we both decided not to remove any action material to make the 45-70 rim fit, so I turn the cases down to 14.5mm and put a slight extraction groove in the web of the case 0.20mm deep. Not a big deal seeing as its just my 'big stuff' gun, its unlikely that I'll go through too many cases. I'm thinking next time I go out it's a 303 hunt and I'll pack some 215gn Woodleighs in my No1 Mk3. Although seeing how effective the 45 was its going to be hard not to take it!

Or- you could build another - this one would fit. Same case for both. The rimmed case is a .348 Winchester, necked up to .45 and taper reduced - same rim diameter as the .45/70.

The one on the right is the same .348 Case, with rim turned down + extractor groove to fit a magnum bolt face (#4 Enfields need no modification to extractor) for function in a bolt actioned rifle. This ctg. also fits Mausers just fine.

Capacity is just a few gr. greater than a .458 Winchester.

I call it the .458 Alaskan.

Thought so. I used to do some stuff organising a shake a leg festival they had. Jaqui Katona still around?

BTW Woodleighs work well in the Smellie three oh.

Everyone had a good time on this trip, hope to do it again soon! I'll look into the modified .348 case Daryl it looks pretty wicked. Kamilaroi, I had no idea who Jaqui Katona was until I googled her, so I couldn't tell you if she's still around. Oh and I plan on taking my No1 Mk3 out next time with Woodleighs too!

Congrats on your Buff 303British, sounds like you had a great experience and will remember the trip for the rest of your life. You caught my attention with your Rifle. I am thinking very seriously of having one built. in 45.90 as my next project. Interesting solution to removing metal from the action.

I'll remember it alright Perry! Hope to go back out with the boys soon and get an eater for my mate and a bigger buff for me again! I can't recommend the Lee 45-70(or 90) enough! Its easy to shoot gives plenty of power and its as smooth as silk, what more could you want? I thought about building it as a 45-90 but in reality the benifets aren't really worth it, 70 brass is easier to get and cheaper and the power differnce is minimal. If you like I'll forward you the details of my gunsmith mate that did the build.

I'd appreciate that 303British, I'm a little way of starting but will be in the market for a No 4 action shortly. I'd considered the 45.90 as I've heard the 45.90 feeds more reliably than the 45.70 due to it's overall length more closely matching the .303 Brit cartridge.

Daryl's tip re the necked up .348 case is more than worthy of consideration also. I do have several hundred 45.70 cases and several hundred Cast Projectiles on hand and nothing to shoot them from just to complicate choices though

Between the rifle and the buff I must say I'm a tad envious.
