This is a photo of my best Thar, shot May 2006. Rifle is a Sako 75 30/06, 180gn Rem factory ammo, Zeiss 1.5-6 scope. He is just on 13inches.

No mate. Not the West Coast. Too much "flat land" in the photo for it to be the West Coast.

Great trophy! That size is hard to come by nowadays they say.. I went Tahrhunting back in 2001. Awesome experience, The hardest and best hunting I've ever had, and probably ever will have.

I went up the headwaters of the Rangitata and Rakaia main rivers. Great country, and less vegetation than the West coast, but, it is not that much flatter!:-o

12.5" Thar taken in may with a 308 Steyr from a valley near the Lowrance.

Like Bonde said "it's the hardest and best hunting I've ever had". So much so, I just kept on doing it until I got it out of my system! NZ, It's a slice of Hunting Heaven!!!

My last Thar. Shot March 2008.

He was shot very low down. Almost but not quiet in the creek. Weather was very hot and there was no snow within a stones throw. Rifle was again the Sako 75 in 30/06.

Hi Rod,

My first tahr hunt.

I was using a cheap & cheerful (borrowed) Mossberg stainless synthetic .270 with Rem 140gr ammo.

Shots were not far and the .270's did the job. Nannies are not that big, and were both neck shot anyway.

Defiantly worth having a "weatherproof" rifle as we had to cross a waist height river about 40 times the previous day, thankfully we were staying in an old mustering hut and could dry our gear out.

Just picked up a couple of bags of tahr sausages from my hunting mates (they made about 20kg of sausages yesterday).. well thats tea sorted for a while anyway.

Hi John,

The distinctly kiwi hunting outfit is very practical, if a little unfashonable! Quick drying shorts and polyprop longjohns are great for river crossings and keep you cool when climbing.. living on the plains and having done very little exercise over the past few months certainly made the cooling effect greatly apreciated!
The only drawback is that there is always a good few snow covered spaniard grass that jab you up from your gaiters.. I hate the bloody things

G'day Joe,

Mate I'm surprised to her that was your first thar hunt. You looked so relaxed in the photos. I remember my first thar hunt very well even though it was almost 15 years ago. I was terrified!I spent most of my time clinging to Mother Earth, and wondering if I'd make it back down to the Valley floor alive. And all I could manage to shoot was an old cow that only had one horn. My mate reckons it's my "Unicorn".

It was interesting though. I met your local flora, mainly spaniards, and matagarie. Found out that coming down shingle slides looks easy but, almost wore a hole in my trousers doing so. Apparently one shouldn't slide down them on their arse. I also was cold all day, colder at night, and found that small gas stoves with disposable canisters do not work all that well when up high.

In short I had a bloody ball. I've been back several times and will do again.
