Water buffalo - wild vs domestic
      #3715 - 09/07/03 11:00 PM

I've just been looking at a few photographs of water buffalo. As usual I have been struck by the difference between the domestic Asian beasts of burden and the wild or feral Timor water buffalo of Northern Australia.

My question is why the considerable difference in horn? The domestic animals always appear rather puny with much greater curve in their narrower horns.

There is also reportedly two types of water buffalo. The swamp and river water buffalo. Is this correct? And which type is the Aussie beast?

Thanks

For a real horn difference have a look at the south american version of asian buff, usually you can find them in SA game ranch type sites..a real miserable horn type if you ask me more akin to Swiss brown horns. Are these another type? Is it that we see the milder mannered animals and not the bulls--do they work the bulls? i dont know myself.

Gryphon the water buffalo here in Texas have the small curved back horns. Guess everything isn't bigger in Texas.

The Asian waterbuffalo of which we have plenty here,is approxately the same size as the cape buff.i.e. as far as the body but the horns are much smaller though there is a buff. but that to is small. The males are used by farmers for ploughing fields while the females for their milk.On the border in the nomans land between India and Pakistan some buffs. and cows are to be found which are completely wild and dangerous and people do hunt them but at the risk of drawing HMG fire from the Indians.

OK, some photos. Domestic vs wild water buffalo.

Domestic

This domestic buff is closer to the wild water buffalo. From Chiang Mai in Thailand.

Interesting line or two pasted below

Swamp buffaloes are from China, Southeast Asia, Philippines, and Indonesia. These animals are used primarily for draft purposes and have broad, wide horns, a chevron on the chest, legs lighter in color, and larger hooves.

River buffaloes are from India and Pakistan. These animals are used primarily for dairy products and meat production, have tightly curled horns, and hold their heads high.

I'm thinking about to try one of those big boys but..... I don't know if isn't a waste of time to cross the planet, just to the other side, to hunt a buffalo. Can I hunt any other specie in Australia while a buff hunt??? Should I try it or not??? It's better than Argentina hunting??

Most of you are from Australia may be you can help.

Thanks.

You can hunt Water Buffalo and usually in the same area feral Donkeys, Scrub Bulls, pigs, Dingos, some areas wild Camels. I last hunted in Northern Territory and took Buffalo, Scrub Bull, Donkey, pigs and 3 Dingos No Camels they where few hundred miles south of where we were and of course you can observe Crocodile ,which are protected, with your special camera .

In addition to the game animals named above some hunters also try for Banteng and Sambar deer on the Coburg Peninsula. Permits are limited though and expensive so book ahead if you are interested.

Also scrub bulls.

Plus a lot of international trophy hunters also hunt on properties in Queensland - Northern Qlds for Chital, Red stag in the Brisbane and Mary Valleys, Hog deer in Vic. Goats in the plains.

Also wonderful Rusa in New Calendonia and of course red stag, sika deer, sambar, chamois and tahr in New Zealand.

A good outfitter will have connections to other outfitters and can help put together a really good hunt across various regions and game for which you are after.

Sometimes the special cameras have long zoom shafts and points with barbs.
