Vetterli Anyone?

Just purchased one of these old girls, nice metal but missing firing pin + spring and the loading port cover. Butt stock OK but forend + loading tube shortened - price was right so what the heck.
Anyone out there "playing" with one of these, as in modifying (customizing(ed)etc. Any comments will
be appreciated. Neat old gun and quite "complicated", I can see however converting to centre fire would not be difficult. --- John

Re: Vetterli Anyone?

Hi John,
I play with a Vetterli.
I converted mine to centerfire and it is not to difficult at all.
I form cases from 8mm Lebel brass using a cutoff die I made for my reloading press and a jewlers saw.
I then run the shortened case int my Lee sizing die far enough so it just chambers.
Fire form them and then trim to final length.
Mine has an excelent bore that measures .429" diameter.
I use the Lee 325 grain mould meant for the 44 magnum to cast bullets.
Pan lubed without gas check they will easily shoot into a 3", 5 shot group at 100 yards.
Check out swissrifles.com forum for a very in depth look into Vetterlis and all other Swiss rifles.

Re: Vetterli Anyone?

Neat old rifles. I have 2 factory rounds, rimfire of course. One is missing the paper patch that goes around the neck - cold never figure why they did that!! The other round has the paper patch running around the bullet and case neck, as normal for the round. Bloody weird!

Re: Vetterli Anyone?

Daryl - One of those rounds wouldn't be for sale would it, I would like a example in my collection?
Ash - It's all a part for cleaning, I'll Email you some pics. when it's all apart & put back together,
it will be a few days. Weird is right but well made.
Matt - Thankyou for your information on & off screen. Anyone have a firing pin just laying around? --- John

Re: Vetterli Anyone?

John - I would not part with the one that is still properly patched. The other would have to be hand delivered or by the dangerous goods shipper for Canada. That would be Puraltor. I assume their charges would be about $20.00, I think, that is IF they would take it as it is a live round. I cannot risk a Federal Charge to ship it illegally.

Re: Vetterli Anyone?

Well some time has gone by and I'm still playing with the Vetterli and making some progress.
I've got some lead bullets and have the dies on order, looking for brass but a vendor up here has some Lebel at not a bad price. A gentleman I approached on Cdn Gunnutz sent me a spare firing pin he had so that saves me a bit of work. Got the stock refinished, its been cut to sporter length but will do for now. Just a brief update - take care all. --- John
