Inside an Zeiss Zielmultar

Just cleaning up an zeiss zielmultar 1x-6x and took the chance for some pics.
Zielmultar, Zielmulti, Zieldovier and zieldosechs were the first modells from zeiss
with variable magnification. The scope on the pics is an very early one with 4 digit sn,
made around 1925.

I forgott an interesting point- the craftmanship in steel has an price- the scope weights 940 gramm!!!

Anything made in Germany has always been over engineered to billyo!
If they built such a precision instrument like that do you think they'd fit it to a 2 bob set of mounts.........NAH!
Every single piece would have had shear tests done on it metal wise to withstand the recoil forces applied under firing conditions, even those fine crosshairs themselves!
Just goes to show that quality does come with a price & that fine pieces of history such as this should be loving restored!
Most probably it will still be going well & truly after we're dead & long gone!
I do hope that it stays in a good home & treasured, passed down from father to son so they understand that everything modern even though it might be bigger & faster is not a replacement for tradition.
Put that little Zeiss on a pre war Mauser in 7x64mm - now that would be a nice piece of kit!

Wonderful stuff !
The variable scope from this period is far more complex than the fixed power.
I can dismantle a fixed power scope pretty quickly and without drama but I wouldn't attempt this variable without some training .
I assume the graticule is at the eye piece ( rear end ) so that the variation sleeve is pushed out from the objective end .
For safety of the graticule I assume also that the setting is 1x so that it is retracted

Zeiss scopes are easy to dismantle- if you know the way.
Best thing is to go step by step trough the zeiss discription for dismounting.
As by all zeiss models the most important point is the correct position from the elevation knob and lever for magnification ( or by zielvier and so on the lever for focussing.
Zielmultar is easy:
unscrew the ocular/eyepiece, take the corect position- focussing lever in the middle/elevation anti clockwise till stop, take up the saddle, on small screw holds the complete innertube. If there is no rust etc. in the inside you can pull out the innertube.
For reasembling you have to watch that the red points on the gears are matching.
Thats all for cleaning up and enough if it is mechanical ok.

I have the same scope and was hoping to mount it on a vintage gun. It has a claw type system which is difficult to find the female mounts. If anyone is interested, let me know [image][/image] [image]

If you down load the catalogue you will see claw mounts, which a competent smith can work on with your scope.

the recknagel mounts will not fit to the scope mounts on this zielmultar.
Claw mounts from this time where fit in by hand for each mount.
I would be interested in the scope and also the mounts....

I dont know what they are worth outside germany.
An zielmultar in good condition and working order is around 500 + (euro) in germany.

Chapmen, I have an old tripod mounted Zeiss "Starmor" spotting scope which needs to be professionally cleaned and also needs 2 of the screw on rims to the eyepieces (don't know the correct name for these) replaced or fabricated. Do you know anyone in Germany or elsewhere who can do this work?

Wow, an starmor with tripod is one of the things i am looking for years.....

Also, thanks for the link to starmor page. Mine is like the first one, top left with brass showing. I am missing two small screw on brass rings, but third one is present. Will see if I have any photos.
The 'starmorbi' is the one to have, but very rare. I saw a mint one in new york for 3K USD about 8 years ago, should have bought it. There are also some very large binoculars, as I'm sure you know. Very interesting and beautiful stuff.
I love all German made Zeiss optics!

I had an early 9x57 repeater marked up as Max Fischer in Berlin. The scope was a 4x81 Dr Walter Gerard, Landlicht AG, on Akah tunnel claw-mounts. The scope mount rings on this early rifle were not split, meaning you had to pull the scope to bits to take it on or off these mounts.
