My grandfathers Krag.

Hello all.
I got my Grandfathers Krag today. Oh, great.
It is a matching numer one, even the butt plate. Great!
Oh yes, the trap door was opened and inside was the original cleaning kit, guess unused to
Thanks grandfather.
The gun was used by him from the WWII and up to the late 50`s for moose and rein deer hunting in Norway.
I have no information about if he used it during the war. Maybe.
The gun is made in 1901, serial number is: 51885. Any information on the gun is welcome.
I also got a action only, also owned by him, made in 1904.
These one I am planing to have re-builed back to its original look and take it out to the range and also for rein deer hunting. That will be very nice. But, was the Krag ever issued with a scope?

Nice rifle & gift from Grandpa, I see your not asking for opinions but here is mine anyway. However do as you wish - it is "your" rifle. Personally because of the family connection I would leave it alone except for maybe a good thorough cleaning. Redoing it may & probably will take away some of the grandpa's gun "heirloom" family appeal. I know because I've been there & done that to my chagrin. You have an Action only, again from grandpa, to do with as you wish - rebuild / custom etc. JMHO - FWIW --- John303.

Hello and thanks for the reply and tip.
Well as you say, I will only clean these Krag, just try and bring it back to life and still keep it`s look and the feel I have for it.
The action I also got is going to be made to a hunting gun, but with the look of a true Krag.
Maybe, try and fir it with a scope, a old type and mount if I can get it, a original will/is the dream.
It is really nice to have these gun, if it was able to talk, woow.
I am really starting to like it.

You are a very lucky man, indeed! what an honor to have the rifle that your grandfather used in the army and hunted with! And some day, your grandchildren will continue the tradition . . .
It can't get better than that. A truly fantastic family story, and, yes, if only the rifle could speak!

To agree with John303 100% - for your own (and your children's benefit), leave it alone!
I have no problem with improvements but re-blueing rarely looks right, and for such a personal heirloom it certainly would not
The rifle could be used for nearly anything you wish, and its family history is a bonus. Good luck with it

Yes, the more I look at the rifle and think abut it`s history/family heirloom, the bigger smile I get.
I do feel proud. Wish I only ask more about it when granddad was still around. Sadly. Guess a lot think about these things when it is to late...But, never to late to keep the gun alive.
That is something I will do.
I will take it to a gunsmith and have him look over the trigger, action, barrel and so, then I will clean the rifle, nothing more.
THEN, I will take it out hunting.
The interesting thing about hunting is, that I and my father hunt on the same rein deer mountains as my granddad did, even the moose hunting is done in the same area.
Will keep you all informed about the progress.

yes it have the sweet taste of being different, unique and rare
a M 98 military barrel in 8x57 IS can maybe change into a krag barrel in 8x54 by a competent gunsmith and lathe operator

Thanks for the reply`s and the great photos. Yes, the Krag has a good history.
And that sharpshooter rifle, just great. Very interesting scope and mount to. I know Kongsberg made 1000 of that combination. So, if someone got one....send me a pm
Very interesting adjusting system on it. Guess the scope was a german made one, but I do not know.
I am thinking like you, of having a hunting Krag made for me, in the 8*54 Krag caliber. Then the dream is to have a old scope and THAT mount......But, guess I have to go with something more ordinary.
The hunting rifle on the photo under, from FRAM museum, have a great stock. Very interesting, old school and so so nice.

The Krag rifles used by Nansen had an American scope on it, can`t remember the name of it.

I believe the scopes were made by Cataract Tool & Optical Co.
