Re: Jarman Harpoon gun

I watched an episode of Auction Hunters last week where they found a Greener rifle that they thought was a harpoon gun. It turned out that it fired an exploding harpoon like head that was used to finish a whale after it was harpooned. It was in great shape and they fired it on the show.

Whale survives harpoon attack 130 years ago to become 'world's oldest mammal'

by DAVID GARDNER

Last updated at 23:37 13 June 2007

A giant bowhead whale caught off the coast of Alaska had a harpoon point embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt ? more than a century ago.

Biologists claim the find helps prove the bowhead is the oldest living mammal on earth.

They say the 13-centimetre arrow-shaped fragment dates back to around 1880, meaning the 50-ton whale had been coasting around the freezing arctic waters since Victorian times.

Scroll down for more...

130-year-old weapon: The shiny scars on the weapon are a result of the chain saw cut

Because traditional whale hunters never took calves, experts estimate the bowhead was several years old when it was first shot and about 130 when it died last month.

"No other finding has been so precise," said John Bockstoce, a curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts.

Calculating a bowhead whale's age can be difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses.

It is rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts now believe the oldest were close to 200 years old.

The weapon fragment lodged in a bone between the whale's neck and shoulder blade comes from a 19th century bomb lance.

Fired from a heavy shoulder gun, the harpoon was attached to a small metal cylinder filled with explosives and fitted with a time fuse so it would explode seconds after it was shot into the whale.

Experts have pinned down the weapons manufacture to a New England factory in about 1880 and say it was rendered obsolete by a less bulky darting gun a few years later.

Even though the device probably exploded, the bowhead was protected by a one foot thick layer of blubber and thick bones it uses to break through ice one foot thick to breathe at the surface.

Scroll down for more...

The fragment alongside a similar but unfired bomb lance patented in 1885.

"It probably hurt the whale, or annoyed him, but it hit him in a non-lethal place," said Mr Bockstoce.

"He couldn't have been that bothered if he lived for another 100 years."

The find adds growing weight to evidence that bowheads outlive all other mammals.

Six similar harpoon points have been found in the whales since 2001, all suggesting they live much longer than previously thought.

The oldest known ages for mammals are 110 years for a blue whale and 114 years for a fin whale.

The oldest documented human was a 122-year-old French woman, who died ten years ago.

moby dick

Famous novel: Captain Ahab, leading his crew on a hunt for the great whale Moby Dick

The only other mammal that comes close is elephants, which can live to 70 in captivity.

Scientists believe that the bowheads' longevity is the result of the tough environment where they live in the freezing arctic, where there are not abundant plankton and krill crustaceans to eat.

Consequently, the whales have a slower metabolism to stay warm as efficiently as possible.

Bowheads are an endangered species and there are currently about 8,000 to 12,000 left.

They travel in small pods and calves weigh as much as six tons at birth. Their only foes are man and orca whales.

Alaskan whalers found the harpoon fragment as they carved the 50-foot long whale up with a chainsaw after using a powerful 21st century gun to kill it.

While commercial whaling is now banned by international agreement, natives from Alaska, the Chukotka region of eastern Russia and Greenland are permitted to hunt a fixed number of whales for traditional, non-commercial consumption. In Alaska, meat from hunted whales is distributed to all residents of the hunters' villages.

Biologists can estimate the age of bowhead whales by studying the changes in levels of aspartic acid, an amino acid found in the eye lens and teeth.

Using bowhead eyeballs, each the size of a snooker ball, they say they can tell the whale's age by the amount of acid, which increases in quantity with the years.

"Man accused of shooting at whales with World War II rifle
Associated Press
February 19, 2015 6:21 PM

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A tuna fisherman has been accused of shooting at pilot whales from his vessel with a World War II-era rifle.

Daniel Archibald surrendered Thursday to face the charges and was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Archibald, who's from Cape May, widely considered America's oldest seaside resort, used a Mosin-Nagant rifle to shoot at pilot whales from the vessel Capt. Bob, the U.S. attorney's office for New Jersey said.

A whale shot with a bullet from such a rifle was beached and then died in Allenhurst, more than 100 miles northeast of Cape May, in September 2011.

Authorities said Archibald told them he had "sprayed" fire at pilot whales, which are extremely social animals, about a month earlier to chase them away from his vessel's fishing lines.

Archibald's lawyer Bill Hughes had his doubts about the case.

"I seriously question the U.S. attorney's decisions with respect to this case," Hughes said. "I wish the government had done a few things such as a fuller investigation and read the law."

Under a 1972 federal law, it's illegal to hunt, kill, capture or harass any marine mammal. The law exempts from penalties commercial fishermen who harm marine mammals incidentally.

Hughes said his client is cooperating with authorities."

British author Gavin Maxwell (1914–1969, left) loads his harpoon gun whilst fishing for basking shark off the island of Soay. He bought the small Hebridean island in 1945, with hopes of setting up a shark fishery. 21st September 1946

very interesting pic, what mister Maxwell is loading here is a vintage 1,5" Greener whaling gun http://www.antiquesofthesea.com/8373_Greener_Harpoon.html, probably cheap in scotland in 1946 because out of service for 60 years or more. imho, the only existing pic showing the old Greener harpoon gun in action. mister Maxwell was surely very eccentric because setting up a shark fishery was next to starting a sail ship pirate business.Soay is famous for being the home of the soay sheep living there for maybe thousend years now since this primitive race was abadon by wikings.

look like this one

"Swivel Whaling Harpoon Gun with Harpoon
Signed Peterhead No 5
Sold
36 3/8 Inches, with a 1 1/2 Inch Bore Circa 1839

We are offering a fantastic swivel-mounted harpoon gun matching the dimensions of the earliest Greener guns introduced in 1837, and used for decades beyond as the first truly successful whaling firearms. Such instruments revolutionized the whaling industry at a time when whale ships were sailing farther and longer in search of their targets. These guns saw much use by American and British whalers in the Arctic and Pacific oceans, where the last great herds of grey, sperm and right whales were hunted.

This particular gun, No. 5 of Peterhead, Scotland is one of the earlier swivel whaling harpoons of the Greener style. Original inlaid brass whales on both sides of the stock add to its attraction, as well as the solid brass sight rail with the inscribed marks “Peterhead No. 5", now partially indiscernible. A brass shroud covers the large single percussion hammer that strikes double cap posts, accenting the heavy iron barrel. The artifact is complete with a rare, double-flanged split-shaft iron harpoon with a ring grommet. The harpoon head is sharply barbed with the intent to keep the massive dart imbedded in its prey. It is further completed with its original iron yoke.

The harpoon gun would be mounted to the bow of a working whale boat, and a rope line attached to the metal sliding ring set in the split-shank harpoon, and the rope would be tied to the craft at the other end. The gun made catches possible which had escaped the whalemen of earlier ages, with its range of up to 84 yards, and capable of firing over the obstacle of solid ice in the Arctic. Large grain gunpowder would be used for the percussion cap weapon to ensure a slower, steady burn, giving a smoother flight for the harpoon, especially in calm lagoons and shallows. A significant historic artifact instrument from the heart and height of 19th Century whaling."

it seem the old 19.century jarmann blackpowder rifle became finally scarce in the kongsberg factory after ww2. kongsberg used first left over second line rifles from the wehrmacht like the hungarian M98/40 and dutch M 95 for made the M 48

got a new heavy barrel for shooting the old 11,15x61R carridge, probably only single shot than

the harpoon rifle build with a M 98/40 action seems even more rare

after the exotic actions were used up they take the common 98 k action and called it M 52

http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Fangst&weaponid=FANG0004

in all there were made 3000 M 48 and M52 But I would say that not more than 500 M 48 were made - rare they are today

Re: Jarman Harpoon gun

Two things about this thread:

1. I can't believe in two pages of posts over the years no one with a sense of humour succumbed to the temptation to post a picture of Captain Quint with his Greener.

2. Since these guns are also used for line-throwing, I'll share a story. When I was an apprentice, one of my supervisors told us about working in the machine shop at the local naval dockyard. The shop was located right on the jetty, where the destroyers tied up. They were in the habit of shooting a line to the dock, for the men on land to pull the mooring lines over. One day, the "marksman" involved missed his mark and shot it straight through the machine shop window. Without missing a beat, the shop sweeper grabbed a white(ish) rag, tied it to the end of his broomhandle, and waved his improvised white flag out the broken window in surrender.

The captain sent apologies on behalf of his ship (and possibly a peace offering, unofficially).

Re: Jarman Harpoon gun

I remember the monthly gun shows in Vancouver, British Columbia back in the 80's and 90's. There was a fellow who month after month brought the same minty in the box Greener Harpoon gun, but no one ever seemed interested. I met an old whaler there one day. He told me how many whales his ship got in the last year of legal whaling off the west coast of Vancouver Island, and it was a huge number. When I expressed surprise, he said, "Well, there was a lot more of them in those days."

Re: Jarman Harpoon gun

I am sure any modern brainwashed scietist on board of the RRS Discovery hate whaling. And its not clear which ship it was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RRS_Discovery

darts for marking whales, I think shot from common single shot gun.

a .410 and 12 ga dart to shot into a whale for scientific research. the long .410 plastic shell point to the 1962 build ship. the 12 ga brass case made probably by Eley(?) except the newest ship with this name. don't believe they shot a whale a dart into the blubber anymore for scientific fun.

the japanese were more consequent when shooting on whale for scientific research with a 75 mm caliber:
