Drilling Fell Into My Hands

...well, almost.

A good friend sold me this circa 10 of 1962 Kreighoff Trumpf Dural Primus in 16/16/7X57R with a FL Zimmerman 22 Hornet regulated insert and a Zeiss 2.5-10 illuminated Diavari in claws.

That's Hornet, not rimfire - and it's definitely something to celebrate

Yep, a full length Zimmerman Hornet insert, and a tack driver. It came installed and regulated.

I just had Lee LeBas modify the rear sight operation. Since the insert is in the right barrel, as is common, Lee disconnected the sight from the rifle cocker/selector and made it a manual flip up, so the sight can be raised without actuating the rifle to the front trigger. It's not a problem if the scope is the sight, but I like to have the iron sight option, also.

Lee took out the operating rod and made a spring that holds the blade, and holds the blade down...cleaver gunsmith with a lifetime of working on these guns.

Very versatile and a very lovely gun. I like the engraving. Congratulations.

I always wonder with combinations how well and accurate to sights do the rifle barrels shoot. If they shoot well it is magical. And a testament to the makers skills.

A .22 barrel must be very accurate imo.

How does the 7mm barrel shoot? Please tell.

Congratulations again.

Re: Drilling Fell Into My Hands

I've been through 5 drillings to date, all different rifle cartridges and I can only assume different makers. They date from just before the turn of the 20th century to 1936. I had very little difficulty finding a load that shot to the sights. As with all multi-barrel firearms I've worked with, as one barrel warms and wants to move, the other barrel(s) remain cool and want to hold it in place. Consequently, 3 shots fired fairly rapidly exhibit a tendency to begin to walk. Oddly, with all my drillings they have walked up and left.

I recently acquired another drilling in 9.3 X 72R. I expect to easily find a load for it that shoots to the sights.

In one of my drillings I installed a Krieghoff einstecklauf in 22LR, unlike luv's which is in 22 Hornet. It took me about 30 rounds to get mine sighted in but, after that it is "minute of squirrel head" at 35 yards.

16 ga, 7x57R and 22 hornet is the best drilling combination ever, well , outside of killer grizzly country

there is nothing this drilling will not do the job.

It's always a pleasure to visit here. I've wasted far too much time and energy at 24HR, where everyone is a "cov-tard, lib-tard, pedo-tard"...etc, etc...LOL. It's a free for all of the unwashed, John.

The Hornet shoots MOA with factory WW HPs.
The 7X57 from a cool barred each shot shoots about 1.75 with S&B 173gr cutting edge bullets, awful bullets for big game. They virtually explode on contact. I have some very old stock Remington 165gr RN that reduce the group by 1/3 with my careful hand loads.

The 2.5-10X50 Illuminated ret Zeiss Diavari has a some to do with the finer accuracy, IMO.

For the bad news, my good friend the gunsmith fell in love with it while he was modifying the rear sight from auto pop-up when the rifle was cocked/selected to a manual sight that he modified internally, so the 7X57R barrel doesn't have to be activated to have the rear sight up. Just flip it up and down with your finger, a far better set up for shooting right barrel einstecklaufs.

Well, he wants it, and I owe him countless favors over the last 30+ years, so guess what? He's going to pay me what I paid and be the new owner, but I can borrow and shoot it any time.

As part of the deal he'll install a never used, just as new Kreighoff Left barrel 22 Mag insert and regulate it to the scope at 50 yards on my 16/16/7X65R Kreighoff Trumpf Dural drilling, my favorite gun. Sans scope, I use it often as an upland gun for Chukar, quail, and grouse. It wears a 1.5-6 Zeiss.

Good shooting for a drilling, especially with the Hornet sleeve.
Love the Spaniels.

And I hope we stay polite here! Keep all the 'tards out!

Not great! Keep away from that guy!

OK a good deal.
