I have not heard of that caliber but there is a 8.15x46R that was popular in Germany before the war.

Thanks Louis. Iīm familiar with 8,15x46R which was quite popular but this bigger one seems be quite rare. Just pondering if it would be good for hunting with short distances....

Re: Immanuel Meffert 16/8,5x46R

There is no reason it won't be good for hunting at short distances providing that fast expanding bullets are used and shots are well placed. Hunters probably harvested middle-sized European big game with 8,5x46R more than a century ago, at a time when 6,5x54 MS was considered suitable for hunting elephant, so this caliber should still work today even if it would be consider not powerful enough by today's standards. The only potential restriction may be national regulations for residual energy - in France 1000 Joules at 100 meters when hunting "big game" (from roe deer to above), to be assessed at country level.

Here in Finland you could shoot roe deer with .222 Rem and even with shotgun so I Think bespoke caliber would be enough. I looked shell dimensions and it seems that it could be possible to convert this weapon to 8,5x53R i.e. .338 bullet with opened 7,62x53R shell.

Good luck with your project, Kari; the rifle is a good basis to start with and Imman Meffert is a really classic German pedigree!
