This is an Idea, something that I can make. But....every time I build a wildcat, it ends up being a 375 H&H or more powerful. I have a Ruger and Falling Block Works "J". I need one just slightly bigger than the "J". It uses a 3/4" x 1" block. My original intent was to use 4140 pre-hard, but that was for 30/06 class cases. This is for my own personal use, it will have a seam down the sides. The front, drop block can be machined with a custom end mill. So, my question is, Is 4140 pre-hard strong enough. I have a professional heat treat only an hour away, if needed. Suggestions Please. Retired Tool and Die Mold Maker |

This is what I have found out so far. Option #2 is to make all parts 36 RC, then Ion Nitride the Falling block. #1 is to heat treat the block to 42 RC after machining. Ion nitride the contact surfaces only. Main body 36 RC. Any more input suggestions? |

This should help! Three pcs, so that the square drop block hole doesn't have to be broached or wire cut on an EDM. I can make this at home with an end mill or a key cutter. All my guns [Wildcatting] keeps getting bigger, now I need more Guns. I have most of the steel, so it is time to use some of the 4140 up. Once that I get the design and process all sorted out, then it will be time to make some chips. |

My comments below are only correct if the action is made of three pieces of steel: blue, yellow and pink. It looks blue and yellow will just transmit the rear thrust to pink. Pink will carry the rear thrust which will create an eccentric load in pink. The eccentric load create an outward bending moment in pink. The bending moment creates two problems. First, the loads have a tendency to force the action open (split) and second, the bending moment causes a higher tensile load on the inside faces of pink. |

I guess what had me buffaloed was the drop-block didn't reach to the recoil shoulders of the action proper. Ahhhhh I see, the recoil shoulders are part and parcel to the rear action pieces. I have no idea if that is a good idea or not. I lack that expertise. Sorry. |
