1885 bpcr in 50-90 sharps

One firearm that I have always admired is the Winchester and browning black powder cartridge rifles. Made in limited numbers these are the half round half octagon barreled models that weigh about 12 pounds. I'm not a long range target shooter but I always thought they would make a nice hunting rifle but of course a bit heavy. I didn't buy one because of other priorities and I have a couple of other high walls in 45-70 and 40-65, the calibers these rifles are chambered in. But winchester did a run of 250 of these in 50-90 sharps about 10 or so years ago and I was recently very lucky to fall into one at a super reasonable price. Will post a picture.

First time out with it today and it shot well with a smokeless load. A black powder load is next on the agenda. It is set up with hunting sights rather than target sights.

While these are intended for blackpowder target shooting they are modern strong guns and certainly can handle appropriate smokeless loads and jacketed bullets if one wants to go that way. Smokeless, blackpowder, duplex, lots of fun ahead.

A friend of mine in Canmore Alberta, just got one in 4.5/70 for black powder rendezvous and Cowboy Action Challenge shoots.
Please slug the barrel and tell us what the bore and groove diameters are.

I had my bro shorten the barrel of my Sharps from 35" to 30". It lost a full pound weight and no longer fouls the last 4" of the barrel.
It now feels like a hunting rifle - OK - it's over 11 pounds, but feels really nice now, even for offhand shooting.

Sounds like our guns are about the same size and weight. This has a 30 inch badger barrel. One thing the old timers knew that we have mostly forgotten, it hangs steady as a rock offhand.

Oh yeah - however, at 35" bl. length and 12 1/2 pounds, it was a little too heavy out front for a 69 year old, but was wonderful off sticks or bags.
Cutting that 5" off the bl. turned it into what feels like a killing gun - not to heavy for offhand or to carry and just feels 'right'.

Fun times ahead for you cordite!
Being one of the modern versions of this gun can turn it into a fire breather if you want to!
A 440gn Woodleigh does wonders on pigs!

Buffalo Arms has some wonderful moulds in .50.
You were likely aware of that. My brother bought
one of their 600gr. moulds and with 91gr. Swiss 1 1/2F
gets almost 1,300fps and rings the 1000 meter buffalo
like a bell.
With smokeless and a .030" card under the bullet, it should
make about 2,000fps with that 600gr. bullet, if you want.
