Even big girls look better in a new dress

I hand polished this one out to remove the existing pitting, and added the sling swivels, my engraver re-cut the original engraving and added the barrel script. If I were to guess I would think either Clayton Nelson or Len Bull likely turned the integral barrel. Plenty of fire power in this old single. Case color hardening done by Classic Guns in Crete, Il.

Wonderfully re-finished.
The colour-case is quite tastefully done! Not over-the-top as seems the normal result, these days.

Re: Even big girls look better in a new dress

Nice work!

How does the engraver repair the "557"? Do you weld it up and re-cut? What a disappointing problem that must be!

Re: Even big girls look better in a new dress

Engravers have several ways to fix mistakes. The area can be under cut and material inlaid just like as is done with gold or platinum. In this case my engraver has a micro-welder. This machine is able to lay in material just a few thousandths of an inch thick and the heat affected zone is tiny. I am not happy about the mistake but that is what it is, and it will be rectified.

Thanks for the explanation. It's certainly a lovely restoration.

It should be quite a thumper. What does the rifle weigh?

School me on Clayton Nelson, please? It’s a name I’ve heard before.

Re: Even big girls look better in a new dress

Clayton Nelson is still with us but has retired after a recent stroke. I would have to guess he is in his 80's now. A very old school gunmaker who built a bunch of really big bore guns, many falling block actions from scratch. I believe he worked for Champlin's in the 1970's. I knew him when I attended school in Trinidad Colorado. If you do a google search I'm sure you can find some of his builds.

Roscoe,
The old girl weighs a svelte 11lbs 6oz.
With the duplicate of the 90 Cordite 650 grain load at 1950’/sec it delivers 95.57 foot pounds of recoil. I personally would not care to pull the trigger on the modern 100 Cordite 750 grain load at 2050’/sec.......even tho the gun would take it.

I have a lot of thumpers, but I seem to be shooting them less as I get older.

I'd have to have a few stiff drinks first to 'loosen up' first - would be a fantastic old girl to have spin around the dance floor with!

Re: Even big girls look better in a new dress

Steve and his tradesmen do such nice work, I’m lucky to have him within the State.

If the weather holds she gets to come home tomorrow Wednesday the 8th.
....12”-18” of snow on the ground so no shooting any time soon.
- Mike

EDIT:
The “big girl” is back home and really striking in her new dress. Even the breech block is now properly case colored.
Long day, 4 hour drive each direction, but worth it since Steve shared some “in the works” projects with me.
As mentioned above, likely no real updates until the snow season is past.
......maybe a picture or two in the coming days
