I thought this looked like a good honest gun at a pretty decent price.

One picture shows different patina of the last 6" or so, or the muzzle end of the barrel. Then, the closeup of both sides shows poor filing - or something not normal.
The muzzle's rifling looks just great, though.

Can one of you more informed lads correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the .450 No. 1 Express the same as the 500/.450 Express?
As a further thought, as there was a multitude of these .45" cartridges it may require a chamber cast before firing!
And yes, beautiful timber on that old girl to say the least & the metal looks pretty spiffy for its age as well, well done!

The 450 No.1 Express is the 2-3/4” version of the 500/450 family.
Think it was originated by Westley Richards.
Agree that a chamber cast and even slugging or otherwise measuring the bore will help in selecting a good bullet for it.
I have a couple No.1 Express rifles and they so far have done just fine with .458” cast bullets.
Also, I have noticed that the 450 sporting rifles tend to have more consistent bores down around true .450” while military rifles are all over the place as far as bore measurements.
The No.1 Express is purely a sporting cartridge though for that matter.
I really wanted this rifle to be buddies with my Purdey 450 but I do need to exercise some restraint occasionally.

A paper wrapped .450" bullet weighing anywhere from 270 to 325 grains, with 110 grains
of Olde Eynsford 1 1/2F will probably shoot wonderfully.
Works for me.

Here's the first results. Bertram brass, four rounds with .459" 350 gr hard cast from Laser Cast over 27 grains of Trail Boss (load adapted from the Hodgdon web site .45-120 Sharps data), and two rounds with .459" 300 gr soft cast from Buffalo Arms over 110 grains of Swiss 1-1/2Fg and a thin veg wad with just a bit of compression.

Try some 5744 with a large Magnum primer. I would start some where around 30grs.

Your BP load shows a lot of promise there bpesteve!
The TB load shows promise too, may need to see what the 300gn's do for that same load, as you don't state what percentage of case it actually is - like any loads it can improve up or down from first loads done.
What velocities did you get by the way?

The TB load was about 75% of case capacity with the 350 gr bullet, and I'm guesstimating only about 1300 fps. I'll be curious to see what the chrono tells me later as I go along. That's pretty slow, especially as the twist is 1 in 36" as close as I can measure with a tight patch - if you look closely it appears the bullets are tipping just a bit.
The BP load, on the other hand, shows nice round holes. With the lighter bullet and guesstimated 1700 fps it's much more likely to be well stabilised with the long twist. The delightfully pristine Henry rifled bore was also a snap to clean even with that small hat full of BP in there.
