Cleaned this one up some

A really rusty old Fark, my PC was hit by lighting so no before pictures. We cut down the sides of the action .015" to remove the deep pitting and hand polished the remainder, new scratching by Charles Lee, We fit a new 26" Krieger tube in 450/400 with a quarter rib, custom scope bases, shop made front sight and gave it a rust blue. The client made what I feel to be an excellent choice of a Noseke scope which is 7/8" in diameter and looks great while providing the extra eye relief needed to effectively scope a single shot rifle while not cutting into the front ring of the action. We did not do the stock work on this rifle.

Re: Cleaned this one up some

Here's a couple of "Before" photos, after being restocked by Fajan to duplicate the original oil soaked stock:

I found this rifle in the vault of Kenya Bunduki, a gun store in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1972. It was fitted with a 450/400 barrel devoid of any maker's name and was in deplorable condition. Once I got it home, I had it restocked and rebarreled to .50 Alaskan, since its parent case, .348 Winchester, was the largest Boxer primed rimmed case which was then easily available. The .510" caliber barrel was from John Buhmiller. the famous barrel maker, gunsmith, cartridge developer and African hunter. It stayed in that shape until a couple of years ago, when I turned it over to Steve to work his magic on it.

Sensational looking rifle. I am sure most of us would be happy to have and old relic like that to restore and hunt with. Well done.

Re: Cleaned this one up some

Very nice work, and a great outcome.

It looks like the engraving is faithful to the original pattern:

Photo above, original; photo below, restored.

The engraving is spot-on with my original:

Congratulations to you both on a worthy restoration of a fine rifle.

Questions: What was the original chamber? 3" or 3.25"? Which chamber did you choose for the restoration?

Re: Cleaned this one up some

Roscoe,
I have never seen the original barrel so can not answer that part of your question. We chambered it for the 3" case due to the fact that Hornaday is loading that round currently.

Re: Cleaned this one up some

Roscoe,

The only markings on the original barrel beside the British proof marks read "400 EX. CORDITE 60---400 MAX." Right behind the fore end lug is the figure "24". No other marks, no maker's marks, nothing. 25" barrel with one standing and two folding rear sights. The second folding sight is missing. Sling loop on the barrel.

Always nice to see a vintage scope paired with a vintage rifle!

Good choice of calibre, I would have chosen the same. Good to see a mainstream American ammunition maker making such a wide variety of ammunition, they have a huge range currently with lots of British and European. The people at Hornady must obviously be a bit more cosmopolitan than the others, maybe they enjoy shooting older classic guns as well and have noticed that theses guns are actually quite popular around the world and therefore an economically viable market.

Re: Cleaned this one up some

Mine is chambered for the 3.25".

That suits me particularly well, as I have two double rifles with the same chamber; one a BPE (my Woodward) and one a NE (Greener Fascile Princeps). One set of dies, and a few hundred rounds of brass serve all three.

Interestingly, I have never owned a rifle chambered for the 3" Jeffery round, though I wouldn't hesitate to have one. Certainly that is a good choice for your restoration.

BTW, Hornady is into the 3.25" round also. I have a nice trove of their 3.25" brass.

Probably you guys have seen it, but here's a link to a thread about my PD Farquharson: Army & Navy CSL Farquharson - .450/.400 3.25" NE

It is a brother to the rifle above. We should get together for a shoot.

As an aside, these rifles are rather light. You might mimic my N-for-B load discussed in the linked thread. It's a dandy and should take care of any North American game short of the big bears.

Thanks for posting.
