Re: Joseph Lang Farquarson

Sounds like a P.D. Wal's book on the trade Farkies would probably be a good start.

Re: Joseph Lang Farquarson

There is a Lang Farquharson pictured in Winfer's book but no information about how many they may have retailed.
The one pictured in the book is described as showing "typical Webley finishing work" which I take as a nod to suppose that Webley made the guns entirely and Lang had little in the making other than retailing - very common practice actually.
Of course, Lang also retailed at least one Webley 1897 and I would think that they also retailed Webley 1902 actioned rifles as well.
Mentioning this simply because the word Farquharson is used a little loosely to describe many different falling block rifles.

There are some great books on the Farquharson rifles. Wal Winfer's series on single shots includes an entire volume on George Gibbs Farquharsons and another on Jeffery and the trade Farquharsons.
Kirton's book on the "British Falling Block Rifle From 1865" is also a great book for anyone interested in Farquharson rifles.

As for the Farquharson name, or John Farquharson the inventor of the action, I don't know any books offhand other than those I mentioned.

Hmmm....I looked at the rifle today, it turned out to be a single center fire hammer fully rifled bore rifle, with an octagonal barrel, express sight for 50, 100 and 150 yards , I THINK its an 8 bore, will check as I bought it along with a Purdey shotgun..

The Romance of Poaching in the Highlands of Scotland-As illustrated in the lives of John Farquharson and Alexander Davidson, the last of the Free-Foresters.
By
W.Mccombie Smith

Its a small book about the life of John Farquharson as a Poacher. It doesn't delve to deeply into how he invented the rifle, but its a good read.It shows what a tough life he led.

Re: Joseph Lang Farquarson

AT that bore it doesn't sound like a Farkie to me though it may be a harpoon or sealers gun.

Might help / maybe not but try Cornell Publications & Collector Grade Publications.
Might be some material there, worth a look. --- John
