Ruger No 1 custom safety mods...

Just back from another 5 week stint in China...

In the meantime Tony Small from Nickal Traditional Gunsmithing has been busy modifying the safeties on my two Ruger No 1's in .450/400 NE 3" and .303 British.

He also modified both triggers to a light crisp release.

I wanted the final safety to be low profile and have a similar appearance to the timeless elegance of those on fine British shotguns and double rifles.

The empties now ping halfway across the room rather than have the rims catch up on the original poorly resolved Ruger factory safety.

I think you will agree he has done an outstanding job... Tony is a superb craftsman, highly recommended for custom gunsmithing!

Tilleyman, is this a major job (milling to action)or just a replacement part?
I had my safety top redone a little on my No1 so the cases wouldn't keeping hitting it - definitely a fancy mod to the original safety which looks like just an after thought!

It is a relatively major mod... a 8mm recess is milled in the top strap and a custom safety catch made up which sits much lower and more integrated than the original Ruger one.

Just measured 10 trigger pulls on a Lyman digital gauge...

.450/400 median weight is 3.5lb

.303 median weight is 2.7lb

Just the way you'd want it

This custom modification to the No. 1 safety looks really good. I am wondering if there are any gunsmiths here in the Western US that can do as good of a job, I'd certainly be interested in speaking with them.

My goodness, is that a standard Ruger finish on the inside of the action? It looks like a drainhole cover! No doubt it works though.

I was surprised and thought that too.

TilleyMan, Great looking modifications to the safeties. One of these days I'll get around to having the safeties reworked on my #1's. Personally I think the factory design safety was on purpose. Ruger would rather not be sued if someone got popped in the eye by a cartridge. Englishman and Gryphon; your right the insides are pretty rough. Keep in mind the action is investment cast and they only smooth/clean up what is necessary for correct function of the rifle. Maybe not as pretty inside as a Holland & Holland but a darn sight less expensive and you don't see the rough when the stocks bolted on.

Check in with Dirk Schimmel up in Wyoming. He was Searcy shop foreman when he was in S.D. He's worked on some of mine and the craftsmanship is top notch!
