Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

For those of you that dont frequent AR here are some pics of Col Allison's newest addition. It is now fitted with a new Leica 2.5-10x42 and shoots in the .5" with handloads, (like every Soroka built to date ). I now guarantee .75" 3 shot groups with the right load. He's told me he is happier than a pig in ...Please note the gap between underlever and trigger guard happened after colour casing and has subsequently been rectified.

Fantastic figure.
Will it see the bush?
I had a look a the Soroka website, wonderful gear.Is the CA model the $14,500 model or has it any of the proffered extras?

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

Col has assured me it will get plenty of use. I really hope it does. No, Col's rifle has full fine English scroll engraving, (which is an upgrade) and upgraded wood. Below is a pic of a base rifle with $500.00 wood upgrade, so it is pretty close to a base Soroka 07, which is still a well presented rifle. Includes, quarter rib, cheekpiece, ebony tip, barrel band swivel, partial engraving of receiver, grip cap, 24 LPI wrap checkering, high grade wood, decellerator old english pad.
This rifle was made for well known U.S author and gun scribe Tom Turpin. He likes his rifle very much as well....

Neither customer wanted irons because they prefer a clean barrel (as do I) and scopes dont tend to give too much trouble these days. Just take a spare, if on a long trip and the optics get damaged. I have fitted the Recknagel H&H style flip over ivory bead front sight and a standing V in the rib at the rear. Looks right on a African Express. So no problems to fit a traditional sighting of required.

Typical of Col, he has always had good taste and I guess that like wine, his tastes have improved with age.

A very nice rifle, both of them,

I've been looking forward to seeing Col's new rifle. That is beautiful! You are very talented indeed. Are those bullets .300H&H with it? They just look different to mine, unless my eyes are playing-up.

Yes the ammo in the pics of Col's rifle is in fact 7mm Rem mag. I didnt have any 300H&H on hand when an opportunity came up quickly to have some pro shots taken and figured that some ammo was better than no ammo. Apologies to all, got Col a bit hot too as he is a stickler for detail, which is fair enough.

Yes the grip detail is something that really gives an old English - Gibbs, Alex Henry, Fraser look. For those that prefer or need a tighter grip I have made a tighter radius version grip which still looks good and follows the the line of the underlever,to maintain harmony "to the eye".

No, no! Never put a tighter radius grip on those beautiful rifles. No need to "Winchesterize" them.

Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Glenn,

Glad to tidy up the photos. They are lovely. Your rifles make the PD Farquharson I recently acquired look crude. Maybe one day. . . .

Mine must have iron sights with a QD scope. I think my caliber choice would be .375 Flanged Magnum NE.

Oh to dream.

But while I'm dreaming, let me ask: How much red tape to get one of these into the U.S.? I suppose it's subject to an 11% import tax. Correct?

Great work for sure.

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

Hi Curl,
I recently spent 4 months in Canada and the U.S.A.attending shows and organising engravers, colour casing etc. Anyway as a result of this trip I currently have around 20 x completely finished barrelled actions, polished to 600 grit ready to be fitted with stocks in the U.S.A. I am heading back to the U.S. in the next couple of weeks to get a U.S workshop established as there is not the skill base in New Zealand for engraving, colour casing etc. Additionally I had some issues with the first prototype rifle wood shrinking quite significantly because the humidity in N.Z is so much higher than say in the Rocky Mountain regions of the U.S.A. So all things considered it makes sense to have the rifles finished in the U.S.A. So to answer your question there is no 11% to be added or Red tape, as the barrelled actions are already in the U.S.A. There will just be the shipping and insurance to your FFL from Wyoming. I currently have 7x57, 270, 30/06, 7mm Rem mag, 300 win mag, maybe a 300H&H, a few 375H&H Belted and a 404 Jeffery in the U.S.A.
If you desire a 375 flanged can do. The actions do reliably extract rimless as well as rimmed cases. The extractor is the same and the "bite" is also the same, and they both work on a rim. There is a rather powerful spring applying side pressure to the extractor. (Strangely enough it seems to work almost as well without in place.)I know all the traditionalists like the rim but it isnt necessary. Its way easier and cheaper to get ammo for a belted, but as I say if you want a flanged no problem.
Open sights arent an issue. I have fitted NECG H&H band front with flip over ivory bead and a standing V in the Quarter rib. They are quite usable too with the standard stock shape. You dont have to mash your face into the comb to get a correct sight picture.

Thanks for your kind words. Chisels and files just cant compete with CNC and hand finishing which I guess is why all the top end makers in the world use CNC today. Additionally my rifles are new and as tight as a Swiss bank vault, lock time like a win M 70 and a fully adjustable trigger with no creep etc.
I used to dream of owning an original but that flame has been well extinguished now.

Cheers

Glenn

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

I would if I knew I would get at least 5 orders for them, otherwise it would be a lot of work for not much return. Martin Hagn has a box full of his large actions (cast) that have neen sitting under his bench for years. He was led to believe that he would get all the orders he could handle and they never came. Contrary to what the movie said. The action I have now will handle a 450 nitro, and thats quite enough for most animals on the planet.

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

Yes the trigger is fully adjustable and we did have some issues with Cols trigger being to light (for customs or some other "costumed" official, when it left here so we simply swapped out the trigger spring for another. In future any rifles that get shipped to OZ will have the heavier spring fitted which can be easily replaced after import. The standard spring will normally let off at 2.5- 3 lbs which is perfect for most people.
I think the heavy spring will be around 5-8lbs?, haven't checked it on a scale, as its way too much for me, but will pass customs test. Does anyone know what the requiresments are regarding Aussie rules?
Thanks

I believe it's "deemed safe" according to the whim of officialdom. Many years ago I heard of a Purdey stock being damaged when subjected to a "drop test". (by a drop kick no doubt)

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

I know for a fact that a rubber mallet was being used against the action to see if it would fire. The reason I know is that an importer known to me told me he saw it being done when he was collecting firearms.

It was only then he realised that a number of shotguns he had returned to the makers for dings in the rib were actually caused by Customs, my understanding is they settled up on damages, not sure if the mallet is still in use.

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

I thought it must be quite a refined and intelligent test.. As we all know the first thing we must do when we load a rifle is to smack the side of the receiver with a mallet for good measure and/or bang the butt on the ground a few times, before sighting and firing. It never ceases to amaze me that as soon as you put a clown in a special costume with stripes, badges and the power of the State that they assume the position of ultimate authority and start exerting it, any which way they se fit. God help us all....
Where does it end?

Was reading somewhere of the engineer that came up with an adjustable trigger system on the Savage 110 rifles circa 1970s from memory. What killed it was the legal requirement to be set to 10lb ... for Australian custom officials.
Cheers...

Re: Col Allisons 300 H&H Soroka 07

Well I hope there is some consistency in the Australian legal system and that all the armed offender, swat and sniping units have rifles fitted with triggers that are around the 10 lbs. As the old legal maxim states- "all are equal before the law". Hmmmm.
Probably about time to dust off the old guillotine and remind some of those what happens when they get the pendulum swinging too far past the middle. The old PTB's (powers that be) are aware of what is commonly referred to as the "revolution line", whereby you dont piss off the masses to the extent they get Madame guillotine out, and revolt. It seems to me they might be treading a fairly fine line in some parts of the world these days.

^ as I understand it the regs require "safe operation". Therefore subject to bureaucratic whim.

FWIW I once had a Hammerli Olympia target model. I think it broke at abt 8oz with no creep. Perhaps it's the lack of creep that spins them out, no?
