Scarpa or meindl

I'm looking for some new boots for mountain hunting.

I reckon a good pair of boots suitable for sambar hunting might do. Or for NZ alpine hunting. The boots might need to be used in snow as well.

I've had Scarpas in the past and they were good, but mine no longer fit.

Looking for recommendations for a good set of boots, perhaps Scarpas or Meindls for the above purpose. Please mention the models and why you think they are good for the purpose, how you have used them etc.

Hoping to use them on another special hunt in 2011.

Look at lundhags.se. If you want a boot for walking and hunting they are very good. There are no goretex. But they are very functionable in summer, or snowy and wet conditions. If you get wet in a goretex boot, and not have drying opportunities they are hard to get dry. These are much easier to dry. Cellular rubber base and shaft of nubuck. But its what you prefer. Re: Scarpa or meindl

I have owned pretty much every pair of boots one can buy at one time or another..bought a pair of these last fall-hiked about 250 plus for sheep, elk, deer, bear, antelope,etc..think they are the best I have ever owned.. incredible lightweight for how sturdy they are..very very durable and absolutely no problems thus far..

while I realize this is very subjective as everyones feet are different..but think these are worth a look.... not cheap..but frankly, nothing in life that is real good typically is....

thanks

Re: Scarpa or meindl

For me personally I need to try boots on for fit, before buying. So buying boots via the internet is not on for me.

Would need a shop somewhere in Adelaide preferably that stocks them, or Melbourne or Sydney possibly.

Re: Scarpa or meindl

Hello John,

My girl friend is hunting in spring, summer and autumn weather conditions (0°C up to 25°C) with rain and dry weather) with Meindl Island Pro boots, and she recommends these.
The boots cover and stabilize the the ankle for hill regions hikes.

I use the military boots of LOWA company, model Camp/men and can recommend these.
(Hoping that Lowa is available in Australia).

Another option (I have no experience, the boots got high marks in hunting journals) would be the Meindl Army GTX model.

For more information:
www.schuh-keller.de (only in german)
Please look for Kategorien (categories) Militärschuhe (military boots) or Jagen (hunting)
If you need help in translation or product information, please send me a PM.

best regards
Rolf

Re: Scarpa or meindl

I've just got some Meindl Denalis for tahr hunting and hope they'll do the trick. However, they seem pretty stiff and I think they might be overkill for sambar hunting, which tends to be done in rough but less-steep country.

Re: Scarpa or meindl

the most important is how they fit, but the Scarpa´s are made with more love to details and a bit better craftmasnhip then the Meindl´s in my view...

I am very pleased with my Scarpas !

Re: Scarpa or meindl

John, Try the fit of Meindl "BADILE" or "Island", Scarpa "Terra gtx, Ranger gtx or SL", Asolo "Power Matic 500", La Sportiva and Zamberland ALL with GorTex inner.

If Zamberlan boots suit your feet then the "Nebraska GT" with its Classic stitched sole weighing in at 750gr would be ideal. http://www.zamberlan.com/catalog/index.php?lang=en&pg=prod&idprod=168&idcat=17

Re: Scarpa or meindl

John,
Though choice. I prefer boots without insulation and gore-tex, plain leather booths with leather lining. Instead of having boots with everything "stitched in" I get a few pairs of gore-tex socks and different wool, synthetic socks for the various climates.
No idea about brands that will suits you. I need boots with foot-arch support and my size isn't really easy to find locally.

Re: Scarpa or meindl

Just my 2 cents. Free, and worth every penny...

My choices based on living, working and funning in the mountains.

Whites; all seasons but heavy rain and cold. Vibram soles. Best boots ever made. Yeah, mountains. They can be finicky to get fit and broken in.

Asolo; great boots for machinemade mass produced types. Soles suck for ice/snow, truly worthless. I am probably going to have my old pair "corked".

Hoffman Packs; Caulk and Knobby soles. Specifically, the Engineer Lineman series. I have two pair and am finally happy with pac boots...

I spend much time in the woods/mountains in boots. Well, every day, actually. Am on my 3rd pair of ski boots this year. Yesterday, 9 miles on skis and when the snow gave out, shanks mare. At it agin today.

Haven't posted much recently. Busy. Some boot pix from the last couple months;

Wore different socks yesterday...

Just commenting on this old thread, purchased a set of Scarpa Ranger GTX's.

They were wider fitting and felt good as soon as I tried them on.

Wore them the first time today on the farm, and felt good.
