I was looking through the internet and came across and article about shooting a 8 bore muzzle loading rifle made by "October County". Has a gun writer saying that the gun is capable of shooting a 2" group at 50 yards, and the list price of this gun is at 4900.00 has anyone seen this article? I just ordered a Kodiak .72 caliber DR, "I just thought this was a big rifle"!!! |

The company as it was at the time of the article is no longer in business. That article is a few years old. You won't find one of those rifles used at that price today, won't likely find one for sale at all either. You can however have one built for you by a custom builder, expect to pay something in the neighborhood of three to four times that price and wait a couple of years for it to ship to you. --Tinker |

Tinker That's too bad!! that would have been a bargin at any price, I just wondered about the load for that rifle, must be quite a push no matter what the load. I guess I will just get happy with my Kodiak and save for a 8 bore hammer gun. I had the oportunity to handle one of those guns at champlin's what a rifle!!! also is anyone still making the 4-8 bore rifles anymore? 470NEBD |

A gunmaker in Udaipur in India supposedly makes 8-bore rifles. Unfortunately due to a mix up in addresses while in the region I thought they were in a different city and travelled past Udaipur before realising. I definitely would like to try to see them in the future however. I will see if more information can be obtained elsewhere. (edited: my enquiries revealed the quality is variable) |

Quote: You are probably right about the wait but not the price. If I recall correctly, Steve Zihn recently quoted me between $8000-$9000 for a double 8-bore muzzleloader. There is actually a thread on muzzleloadingforum.com that prompted my discussions with Steve. Nice guy, that one. Anyway, if one is happy with a single bbl gun, you can get into one for about $3000-$3500 from either Steve Zihn or Jim Gefroh. Count on a year wait for these but the quality will be great. Frankly, from the looks of the October Country guns, one could definitely do better with some of the smaller and lesser known custom builders anyway...in other words, there was no loss with the demise of October Country. Thanks for the note John. Eight to Nine grand for an 8b double rifle isn't so bad. --Tinker |
