EM Reilly Ball & Shot gun.

Found this EM Reilly Ball and shot gun, did Reilly build them with an oval bore or has this one been bored out?

The muzzle pics sorta look oval but I got no idea to be honest.

Re: EM Reilly Ball & Shot gun.

The one I looked at buying a few years back was just really a heavy shotgun, with smooth round bores, never shot it to see if it was regulated !

Love that style of engraving!
Daryl would most likely have a ball load for 12gauge 2 1/2" somewhere

Sure looks like a Westley gun built for the trade to my eye.

Re: EM Reilly Ball & Shot gun.

Both muzzles appear to not be round. Could this just be from being knocked around?

Re: EM Reilly Ball & Shot gun.

Actually W.W.Greener has 2 loads listed on page 689 for 12 bore of .725".

The first is 191gr. (7 drams) and a 599gr. projectile which I assume is a short conical, likely hollow based or of a large crimping groove around it's periphery.

The second load listed is 110gr.(4 drams) and a 545gr. ball I assume, of some tin/lead alloy as a .725" ball of pure lead will run closer to 575gr.

In my own 12 bore smoothbore SxS I used SR4756 powder, a cup wad to hold my undersized .682" ball (482gr.) central in the bore. Other card and fiber wads were used to get the correct height for the crimps used, roll or folded. This/these combination gave me very good accuracy (for a smoothbore gun) and allowed left and rights on a 12" plate at 100 meters. the loads I used were straight out of a Lyman shotshell loading book, #3 I believe. The newer #5 book has even more data to extrapolate from.

Incidentally & this is important(to me), the smokeless loads produced less than 1/2 the felt recoil that duplicate velocity black powder loads produced.

I was able to duplicate the heavy 7 dram black powder load's velocity using SR4756 powder, with no adverse pressure signs of any sort and yet achieve 1,550fps with the ball I used.

There is no reason these loads could not be matched using 2 1/2" cases as well.

Start low, with loads listed for 1 1/4 oz. shot and work upwards to what is listed or suggested in the slug loads.

I picked 7625 as I had a bunch of it shot my duck and goose loads and the starting (duck) loads were listed at around 8,000psi. The same goes for Longshot and that would likely be the powder I would start with today if repeating those tests.

The new #5 manual lists loads to 1,660fps using various powders. Loads with 4756, Blue Dot, Herco and Long Shot are listed. Pay attention to the wad combinations used.
