Interesting and seems to be well thought out.
Their 12 bore slug data can easily be improved with handloading, but is likely quite suitable.
Lyman's Shotshell loading manual has some good data.
The Canadian Made, "Challenger Slug" ammo has a 496gr. Gualandi DGS (Dangerous Game slug) in 2 3/4" ammo at 1,610fps.
The WW 3" 1 ounce Foster Slug running 1,750fps.
Both of these full sized factory slugs will put 5 into 2" at 30 yards, elbow rest on a table top - ending up with just a hole, form my fully rifled 24" Mossberg, with open sights.
The WW 3" has considerable recoil, the Challenger, less so.

Thanks. I always thought it should be a good cartridge. Bit like a 41 Magnum of the auto loading world.

A few 10MM's at our range, .40 S&W now likely as many as have 9mm's. I would suggest most guys who have a 9mm here, also have a .40 S&W.

Interesting article. I shoot both a 454 and 10mm. My 454 is purely a hunting pistol. It replaced my Contender in 375 Win because it offered a quicker follow up shot and was easier to shoot offhand.
When I was in Alaska, I had my Glock 40 loaded with 220 gr Underwood, rated at 1200 fps because it has good penetration and I felt that I would have a better chance at several followup shots.
The author paned the 10mm for shooters with "limp wrist" and recommended a 357 Mag revolver which he said can be had in small frames revolver. I am not sure people with limp wrist would be better with a light weight 357 Mag or in reality, any handgun.

I think people with limp wrist which effects the handgun's proper cycling, should learn to hold a handgun properly.
A wheelgun in .357, I have, but if possible to "carry" it would be my 4" .44 M29 with 300gr. Truncated FP's driven by 20.0gr. W296/H110 - just over 1,100fps in this revolver.
I have another load with my hard cast 275gr.SWC at 1,210fps with AL7 that shoot particularly well.
Of course, carrying either while hunting with bow or air rifle is just a pipe dream.
I do have a DC mould for the 168gr. Keith G/C SWC for the .357, but have not tried any in it. It's a 4 5/8" Blackhawk which so far as been fed 150 FN's and 158JSP's.
Just had a thought- that 300gr. load will cure a limp wrist hold. It's snappy.

The article lacks purpose - "best cartridges"?
For bear ...
For what?
Hunting bear with a rifle?
Hunting bear with a handgun?
Backup handgun for the first? Or bow hunting? Or any other hunting?
Backup protection while working? Camping? Hiking? Fishing? Etc
Big differences for choices.

I was surprised the 45-70 was at the top of the list! I am very fond of that cartridge but I haven't hunted bear with it,,,LK

I've a "bear"(or anything) hunting/stopping load for my m1886/71. 450gr. Hard Cast Bullet Barn Flat Nose @ 1,800fps.
You are right, John. The article assumes the reader also reads the mind of the author, but reads as a surprise attack by a bear.
I would suggest a 12 bore with slugs would be best for the close range attack, if easily brought to bear. This was also Gary Shelton's
suggestion for Forestry Staff protection. If a shotgun or heavy handgun could not be carried, then a knife with at least 12" of blade.
These suggestions were for a person working in the bush, not hunting.

I Have been guiding brown bear hunters in Alaska for 43 years and having killed charging bears with many calibers from the 9mm parabellum to the 505 Gibbs, I can say unequivocally that NO handgun caliber makes a good bear stopping round for tracking wounded bears.
My choice of rifle calibers rests somewhere between the 375 H&H & the 458 Winchester
