Tips for hunting u USA
|
I am off the hunt elk, bear & deer in Idaho in Oct. with local friends. have just bought my Lic.& tags etc.
Does anyone have any tips ? I have never hunted in USA before.....

There is one requirement for any hunt. You must enjoy your self. Take time to soak up as much of the local color that you can. When you finish your hunt we expect details and pictures.

Another thing, after the mandatory steak and potatoes dinner on the first night, have a good shot and cigar while watching the sun go down. Any time you get away from the city, the sights are much clearer and much more "purty."

Pete,
I hunt in central ID around Dixie and Elk City. The best way to get an elk in that area is to sit at a good vantage point over an older clear cut. Get there well before daylight, and leave after last light. It is far and away the most productive way to hunt without horses or a guide.

Pete,
If the QLD in your name means you're from Queensland, get some cold weather clothing, otherwise you will probably freeze your butt off in Idaho. It might be a good idea as well to obtain cold weather clothing once you are in the USA because the "winter clothing" I've seen in shops in Australia is not made for the types of temperatures you may encounter.
Also don't forget a good pair of sunglasses, because if it snows when you are there and the sun comes out, the glare off of the snow can hurt your eyes and make it difficult to see.

I have hunted Red deer all my life and imagine that Elk would be sort of simular..... sit and wait is always good.
re: cold weather, well I have plenty heavy polar fleece stuff from hunting in New Zealand.
Is hunting black Bear & Mule Deer hard ?

By all means a good cigar & glass of port in the evening is vital to a great hunt. If that isn't your "bag" then fill your boots with whatever is satisfying for you.
: Unfortunately, good cigars aren't available in the States - but are in Canada. About the only good thing our government has ever done is to allow Cuban cigars into the country. THEY, are special.

Richard / Pete,
You can get very good thick, warm thermals here in Victoria quite easily due to
the snow season. They are not that expensive either - ie not like Huntech or Stoney Creek.
They can be rated down to 20 below 0 if you need them that cold.

Pete,
As far as how easy it is to hunt the area you'll be in, that is a question you'll have to ask the people who hunt there...and modify the answer based on whether you are hunting for meat or hunting for a nice trophy.
Also if you want arctic type clothing, check North Face...not sure where they're made but they definitely keep you warm. Keep in mind that October is summer in Queensland, so you'll be adjusted to heat and may require far warmer clothing than the local residents wear in Idaho.

I may need to know where to get this stuff in Melbourne if I ever go there in mid winter, because I just pack summer clothes and a sweatshirt and don't freeze until after acclimating to the area...still on previous occasions there I have been wearing shorts and a t-shirt while people in the city were wearing coats and they thought I was insane...

edit: Pete, make certain that the cold weather clothing you take is wind resistant...some cold weather stuff isn't. RGP

I spent 6 years in Commandos - I know what works and what doesn't from spening many hours
in Zodiac's in Bass Straight in the middle of Winter !!!
The thermals work - I wearthe lightweight ones all winter down in Melbourne.
I will find out where to get the thicker ones.
I agree with the previous poster - you will need something that is Windproof
as that can be the killer.

In North America I've noticed temperatures down to about +5 F or so (-15 C) are actually pretty comfortable if no wind...the reason I mentioned the wind is that in a large chunk of North America (including portions of Idaho) otherwise comfortable temperatures can get very uncomfortable with high winds.
Also pardon the dumb question, but is a Zodiac that rubber boat that was seen in the Jaques Cousteau documentaries?

Get someone to take you to a Cabela's store for a day, and bring your credit cards. Anything, and everything you ever wanted/needed for hunting anywhere in the world will be found there.
Also, I'm sure you won't miss your shot when the chance arrives, but, if you would perchance miss, be prepaired to have your shirt tail cut off and hung on the wall. That's an old hunting camp tradition here.

In addition to Cabela's don't forget Bass Pro Shops and Gander Mountain...
Come to think of it it may be a good idea to leave the credit cards at home to avoid poverty...

There is a Bass Pro Shops store in Lawrenceville, which is in suburban Atlanta. Unfortunately, no Cabela's though.
