Legal Iowa deer rifles

Not all that long ago, “legal Iowa deer rifles” was just a dream.
We were limited by law to using shotguns firing a single projectile (slugs) or muzzleloaders,
Around 10 years ago, the law changed and we could use handguns meeting minimum bore diameter and maximum case length requirements. Pistol caliber rifles were added to the legal firearms for deer hunting in 2017.
In 2020 the Iowa legislature passed a law stating any rifle or cartridge with a minimum bore diameter of .350” and not exceeding .50 cal could be used as long as it had at least 500 ft/lbs of muzzle energy.
This law took effect on July 1, 2020.
The Iowa Natural Resources Commission was opposed to this change and came up with a list of allowable calibers. Most were obsolete and basically the commission tried to end run the law.
Well as of a couple of days ago this list was struck down and the law stands as written.
This makes my 9.3x57, 450/400 3” NE and my sons 450 3 1/4” BPE plus a number of other antique rifles of ours legal for deer hunting in our home state.

Me too!
I’ll have to wait for next year to take advantage of it. I already have an out of state hunt planned during Iowa’s gun season for this year.

Wow, I don't understand the logic (not that I generally understand political logic)

AS I read this, I understand that a 30 WCF and a 33 WCF would not be legal for deer but one could use a 350 Legend (375 Win's little bro), 378 Weatherby, 450/400 3” NE, and 50 Browning are legal.

Some states rejected rifles because the terrain was flat and the rifle trajectory meant that it was lethal at several thousand yards (if fires at say 15 degrees). However, that seems to be an issue of trajectory and not bore diameter.

Well, it is good that people are able to hunt with rifles and pistols.

RB,
Yes, the bullet must be .350” diameter or greater up to .500” diameter.
That precludes rounds like the 50 BMG but also .308 Winchester,
30-06.348 Winchester and my beloved .303 British.
Most of Iowa is flat so trajectory has much to do with the .350” minimum.

They fix this Germany by using hochsitz/highseats and shooting at a downward angle.

Good for you Iowa to have somewhat more sensible laws.
