Re: Two Grizzlies in WY attack bowhunters.. bears now dead

Scary situation when only armed with a stick and a string.
A similar scenario happened to 2 longbow hunting friends of mine from here. They were hunting elk up in the Hudson Hope area, sitting on their tree stands attached at ground level, feet flat on the ground.
The one bugling, called in 5 grizzlies. They came from 4 different directions, so 2 were cub and sow. Once the bears smelled the hunters, they ran off. Lucky. They do not bow hunt that area or any other area any more.
Another bow hunter from here had a sow with a 2 year old cub dog every movement they made for 3 days, waiting, I assume for he and his son to shoot an elk. She and her cub stayed within 100yards of them at all times.
That happened the previous year and they no longer hunt that area with their bows.

There are areas here I will NOT go bow hunting in because of the large number of Griz in the area.. they are spread throughout a lot of Montana now.. done by design a few years ago my F&G.. not mentioned to the public.. which is why, when I check fence anymore in the mtns I always have a handgun on me ..in fact I seem to have one on me in town as well.. the city coyotes are far less trustworthy and predictable

what happen with the bears, shoot with handguns?
I assume its legal to have a handgun while bowhunting for self defence

Re: Two Grizzlies in WY attack bowhunters.. bears now dead

I am assuming in both of the US instances, the bears were dispatched by the game branch & they would would use rifles or 12 bores with slugs.
On the other hand, it is possible both bears were killed by the hunters.

If this was the case in BC, those bears, if killed by the hunter, had better have been killed with either arrows, or bullets from a shotgun or rifle - AND the sign (tracks) will have to show a definite charge/attack was made and the bear died within spitting distance of the hunters - otherwise, killing them would be deemed as not necessary & charges would be laid. The bear must be given EVERY opportunity to stop it's charge - before it was shot. Thus the 3 S's apply.

12 bore with slugs is what the park ranges use in Alberta. They found buckshot does not work well in griz.(we fond it is poor on big black bears as well), but a 1oz. hollow based foster slug will find the spine from a chest shot on a standing grizzly bear.
Side shoulder/rib shots are also easy kill shots with slugs. There are better slugs, though, like the Italian Gualandi slugs. Those shoot very well in my rifled Mossberg.

YES, in Montana it is legal to have a handgun on you while bow hunting.. most don't when not in Griz country..don't want the extra weight and hassle of more gear..Frankly in 50+ years of bow hunting I have never had the need for one while bow hunting..

must confess I am not the biggest fan of bowhunting because the early black powder breech loader are trouble enough. if you need to carry a 500 s&w revolver ( and I dont want to meet Mcgriz without a gun when he is hungry) on your side you can also wait for rifle season, imho.

Black/Grizzly hybrid?
There are reasonably reliable and documented hybrid bears in the Colorado San Juan Mountains.
(No...no....no....no Griz in Colorado....no....no....no)

THAT color phase of griz is very common up here..they are not hybrids.. or a cross...
Dark brown....

We also have the odd one. 2 falls in a row, while salmon fishing on the Babine River, we saw chocolate/black sows with 2 year old cubs. Different cows, of course, yet the same colour. Brown backs, black when wet of course, with black sides and hips. Both sows had a silver-tip cub and chocolate/black cub. The first sow had 3 cubs, while the second only had 2.

Can't be Daryl, as I am always told Griz are near extinction.. There is no way you saw that many cubs.

Actually amazing when you think of it.. Think how many griz will be around in 10 yrs. just because of the number you saw..

The only time there aren't grizzlies on that river at that location during the sockeye run is if the river is "blown" by rain.

There are fewer people hunting grizzlies, now, I suspect, except for the odd guided hunt.

In the last guiding territory I was in, perhaps 10 years ago now, we saw grizzlies every day. It is not a large territory.

Grizzly and black bear populations are VERY healthy in B.C.
Last June, saw a young sow black bear with 4 cubs & that was not the first time I've seen 4 cubs. With grizzlies, 3 max I've seen.

Have a very good friend who has a small tract of land just outside Yellowstone--on game camera's he had pics of 17 diff griz moving through the 6 acre parcel in one spring back in 2017---

There are so many griz around its insane.. yet the lies continue on the actual numbers...

Such is the way with anti-hunters. Truth, well they, like some politicians and news agencies, do not know the meaning of the word or are so disingenuous they do not realize when they are lying.
