First two videos were excellent, thanks for sharing.

I didn't like the guide in the 3rd video who (without gun or bear spray) took an inexperienced hunter into an area with a very large mountain grizzly population and then sent in an inexperienced hunter to finish off a wounded grizzly.

You are right, RB - what he did was not only very foolish, but very dangerous for both of them, as well.

Wow - one very level headed young lass there!
Lucky she didn't bolt for it, it would have been a different story then!

Re: Bear Behaviour - Very Good

Should they not have tried to slowly move away earlier? Or chase the bear away?

It seemed to work when the bear may have bitten the girl. Walking away worked.

What would have happen if the bear took a nice hold holding bite instead? While she meekly stood there.

Exactly - I expected that, the way the bear was holding her. I am surprised it did not take a good bite.

Re: Bear Behaviour - Very Good

I read the following article on the effectiveness of bear spray vs a gun: https://www.outsideonline.com/2401248/does-bear-spray-work.

Before reading this article, I had read that scientific studies showed that bear spray was actually more effective at stopping a bear attack than a gun for the average person.

What this article states that most of the reported “bear incidents” in which bear spray turned a grizzle bear, the bear was not attacking. In fact, the article showed only limited number of incidents in which bear spray was used in a grizzle bear attack. In those bear attack incidents, the spray was not nearly as effective as portrayed numerous publications.

Now it could be that the bear spray prevented attacks from starting by turning a bear away before the situation deteriorated.

I was surprised to read that bear spray is not effective with black bears.

Re: Bear Behaviour - Very Good

Thankfully Ive never had to test pepper spray against a Bear; but I had an exciting incident against a big dog. I was a cop at the time and looking for a suspect. As I rounded the back of the house, I came face to face with a HUGE dog who was running towards me. I really didnt want to shoot the dog for doing his job and protecting his yard, so I used my issued Pepper spray. Now I have seen 300lb bouncers turn into babies when sprayed with this stuff; but no such luck with the dog. He did stop and turn away; but it was more like I squirted him with a water gun--sorta a stop that maneuver. No yelping no running away in pain or fear just a WTF?

On another incident, we were serving a warrant and a Pit Bull took some serious dislike to us kicking in the door and came at us with real attitude. One of the lead guys "shot" him with the Taser. The dog went down like the videos, shite on the floor in the process, then took off never to be scene again (yeah we really did look).

Moral to the story, if I was forced to travel in Bear country without a gun, then Id definitely want a TASER (Not a Stun gun but a real TASER). The civilian versions "run" for 30 seconds (much longer than the PD versions). The next question is what you do during the 30 seconds AND what the bear does afterward????

Don't tasers have short contact pins? Considering the thickness of bear fur, I am not sure the taser pins would make good contact with the skin.

They DO shoot darts with fish hook type barbs. You are correct that they might not make it past a thick fur coat; but just like they dont always make it past a human's heavy clothing--they still work even when attached to clothing.

I would prefer if they made contact into flesh; but I suspect that they will get stuck in fur and as fur is part of the animal likely have better effect. IF the probes fail to make an electrical arc, then touching the animal with the gun will complete the connection---although being close enough to touch the bear might be "exciting"....
