Just returned from our Kodiak mountain goat hunt.

I just got back from my Kodiak hunt. It will be my last one for goats. Getting old.

Congratulations on your impressive harvest; that looks to be a real man's hunt!
Some questions: at which elevation did you get your goats at this time of the year; what were the shooting distances; and which caliber/rifle did you use?
By the way, for Forum members' information, Rockies' mountain goats (Rupicapra Oreamnos Americanus) belong to the same family than our European 'chamois' (Rupicapra Rupicapra) and 'isard' (Rupicapra Pyreanica).

Louis we found these at around 1200 ft above sea level. We were able to get to within 232 yards by range finder. I shoot a .378 Weatherby Mark V. I'd say more of a young man's hunt. lol

I've taken a Chamois in Germany back in 1990.

Looks bloody cold there Casper!!!
Also wearing a 'Weatherby' eyebrow by the look of that, mind you, I don't think you would have minded with trophies like those!
Well done mate....still got it.

High 30's during the day and around 30 at night. Not bad. In the excitement of trying to find a clear shooting lane through the alders I forgot that shooting uphill steeply can result it the mark of the crescent moon. lol

Yes all three are. Alaska fish and game want to slow the population on Kodiak as it's exploding. So we are allowed two tags over the counter and you can take 1 billy and 1 nanny or 2 nannies. There were no kids in this group. The largest had horns of 10.25".

I assumed they were judging by the thickness of horn...

Good news that they are exploding.. some areas here as well in Montana... its a great hunt... awesome scenery..but as you stated, not for the old guys ( I can say that as I am one of them )

Well done Casper. I could not have done that (I'm fairly sure) at this stage of the game.
Glad you were able to do it. At least it wasn't a fall hunt with the goats way above tree line. That would definitely be out of the question, for me.

Re: Just returned from our Kodiak mountain goat hunt.

I did that one 2 years ago. Very hard. Fell and tore up my shoulder. Still got my goat the next day. Took the Dr 5 hours in the OR to fix it though.
