Well that's disappointing. I though we where going to see the grand daddy of all snicker's bars. :-)

Good Moose, what calibre did you use?

Re: Back from my hunt early.

This is exciting as I leave Friday for Northern Alberta to hunt Moose starting the 24th. I don't expect anything quite that big, just a legal moose.

By the way I am using that old 'beater" Greener I got from you a few years back.

Congratulations on a successful hunt.

Congrats on the moose...

Was surprised at your rifle you are using up there with all the rain that can happen..

Nice job

Re: Back from my hunt early.

DD please let me know how you do. I wanted to take my new double rifle but couldn't justify risking it on a 15 day float hunt.

Did a float hunt for 10 days this year. Came out early since I got my freezer full. The bulls were not in rut which really hurt. The blueberries were non existant as well. I saw 13 cows and calves and two bulls. This was a 410 yd shot by lazer rangefinder. Last shot of 3 went through his antler when he looked to the side as I shot. An older gentleman that was camped down at the takeout said that it was only the 2nd bull he'd seen come out in the 8 days that he was there. Heaviest bodied bull that I've taken.

Flip, that's a big critter! Well done.

Using the Snickers bar for bait was a great idea.

Re: Back from my hunt early.

Must have one hell of a freezer Casper!!!
Good to see you got a nice bull, a long shot to take him on.
I thought moose were normally taken at much closer ranges being in such dense forests?
Cheers

Re: Back from my hunt early.

Lots of sandbars and gravel bars around the river also lots of sloughs and tundra uphere. This is by far my farthest shot. Most are well within 100yds.

Re: Back from my hunt early.

VERY nice!

Lots of good eating, a nice rick and good memories.
Congratulations.

I have killed only 4 in my life.
My first one was a very long shot. Longer than I'll shoot now, but I was young and on leave from the Marines, time for the hunt was limited and I shot long distances then for a living in those days. So I did it and make a good kill. I used a 375H&H with a 3X scope.
The other three were killed closer. One in Alaska was with a 348 Win at about 35-40 yards.
Another with my 375 at about 125 yards.
And one with a 62 caliber flintlock at about 75 yards.

I have gone along as a "pack mule" on 5 other moose hunts and all of them were kills at 125 and closer. One was killed at about 20 feet.
So 9.3x64 is correct in his assumption that most are killed close, but there is always that chance of a longer shot. I love to get close to everything I hunt. Even antelope. (in fact, especially antelope) That's the most fun part of the hunt to me. But I have made some kills with long range tools at close range. So I think the gun and scope are just fine. It's never really about the gun or scope as much as it is the hunter anyway.
Casper50 obviously did the job just fine.
