I took these pictures of this cow moose in the back yard of my cabin and thought some of the members that don't get to encounter moose would like to see some. The sequence is the cow entering and leaving cover. It always amazes me how an animal this large can virtualy disappear into willows and alders. These pics were taken from 7-12 yards.........the pic where she is in the cover was from 7yds. The last pic, cow facing left, has her alerting on another cow & calf. I live in a moose wintering area so I get to see quite a few. Bear with me as this is my first attempt at posting pics. If they come up, I hope you enjoy them.

It is amazing how such a large animal does become invisible at such close range.

What's even more amazing is how silently these big animals can get around in the woods. You'd think they'd make lots of noise by braking branches etc. but this is not so. They're very stealthy.

When is moose season for you up there? While they are in your area are you allowed to hunt them at all? I have always read that moose meat is the best of all wild venison. They are so big that I'd bet the meat would last a while LOL.

The animal I could not believe how well it blends in is the zebra. Flat black and white and extremely visable up close. Out a ways standing in the wide open virtually invisable. The black and white stripes blend into a mottled grey. Amazing.

I've eaten moose and thought it was delicious.....but I've also had elk that was extremely good as well. Personally I'd rate moose as the best wild game in North America.
Having said that Eland is still the best wild meat I've ever eaten.....one needs to get out a bit!!!
As far as disappearing acts, that north woods brush has a way of hiding about anything. Elephants could disappear at 10 yards in that stuff.

Hello IronBuck,
Moose season here runs roughly Aug.20-Sept.20 so I'm usually gone up North by then to sheep & grizzly camp and can't hunt here during that season. One moose fills up a freezer and we eat quite a bit of it. There are moose here in the river bottom all year but especially now. Moose meat is excellent. I like elk also........Dall's Sheep & Stone's sheep are by far and away the best of the NA game meats imho. But they're all good, eh? Hope your season went well........things have slowed down now so I'll try to get you the pics I promised you from this year.

You're welcome, glad you enjoyed them. I'll post some pics later from sheep and grizzly camp in the Brook's Range. They won't be as messy as the moose......your posting instructions were easy enough that even I could follow them........ major accomplishment for me, the technologically challenged.

Yes, I see a lot of moose, mostly cows, here in the river bottom that are light colored...........see quite a few in other areas, too. The day the pics were taken, it was raining(freezing on the bush and ground) and she was wet and a bit darker than she would have been had she been dry.
I was about sixty miles north of here today and saw a huge cow that was as light as the one in the pics. This winter has been generally mild so far so the moose are in good shape.

Thanks for cleaning up my moose pics........after I posted them I realized what I had done wrong.....then I did the test pics........I think I've got it now.
