Really cool!

Some guys here take a jaunt to kill a bison every other year. Zip over to a place in MT in the morning and have the critter's meat carcass hanging in the locker back here in Idaho in the eve.

Costs have risen recently along with beef, so they might be buying local beef instead.

I gotta kill a bison...

Very cool pic, Nitro!

I have an ambition to hunt fair chase bison oneday with my "bovine slayer", "Zabardast", my Jeffery .450 NE.

I think a bison's shoulder mount would be HUGE, perhaps too big. How are they usually displayed?

I'm not sure if there is a usually, but some have them neck forward, but the limiting factor seems to be size as you say. "Where ya gonna stick the thing?" is the question for most. I've seen some bleached, they look cool too. Most around here only kill non-trophy animals for meat, and sell the hides.

I'd like a full rug with bleached head/horns, trophy or not.

Me too. I'm approaching 10 points for Utah's Henry Mountains hunt. Supposed to be one of the toughest bison hunts around. And damned hard to draw, too, I might add...

Quote:

A few years ago I killed a Boone & Crockett quality black bear and went to Cabela's Kansas City location to view all of the "top" entries. One was a record-book Arizona bison, bleached with Ted Nugent's signature scrawled across the skull. I like skull mounts, and I like Ted Nugent's music & politics, but I'm not sure I'd have him autograph my trophies.

Re: Pics of the day - Hunting in the Americas

My daughter's tree planting crew returned to camp to find a black bear eating cans of bear spray. His entire head was red from the capsicum spray when he pierced the cans.

We have an annual buffalo hunt here in northern B.C. - all wild animals. Originally a guide and outfitter up in Fort Nelson (I think) area bought some - years ago and after a while, they kept breaking out and now there is a substancial wild population of these woods buffalo - again. Yes - 2,000 pounds is a good bull.

John - that charging bear look like he's pissed off. I wouldn't want to have been taking that picture unless it was with a telephoto and I had a big rifle at hand. That's an exciting picture! Makes for some impressive imaging in the mind.

Yes--they are mule deer...

The first time I saw it -the photo was in a "Kings Outdoor World Callendar"...

Mule deer bucks will hang together in the summer --however as fall approaches and the rut enters..the testosterone increases..and they become MUCH less tolerant of one another..

In todays world..it would be very uncommon to see that quality of bucks together..I am guessing they just put together a group of really large bucks from the past and put them together in a photo...again, just guessing...

Bucks hanging together is the same as fallow. I wonder if this behaviour is common of all deer?

Probably not Sambar? What do you say Gryph?

I'm guessing not chital as well. (?} As they seem to be in herds all the time.

Probably not hog deer or other more solitary species. But I don't know.

Always amazing how on rare occasions a predator seems to interact with a prey beast. A lion with an antelope for example. Or here a polar bear with a dog. I would have thought the dog would be frightened but the photo seems to show them as the best of mates ... but maybe the bears are just playing with their food ...

Re: Pics of the day - Hunting in the Americas

This was taken in the USA around 1910. Hunting predators —in this case coyotes—with a pack of fast hounds was common practice at the turn of the last century. So was bringing a .22 rifle or a small-caliber handgun to finish the job if it was not all over when you caught up with the pack. However, a day’s bag of four critters was evidently remarkable enough for this very young hunter to bring everything to the photographer in town and have the event properly documented. Unfortunately, nobody thought of noting any details on the back of the photo, so the identity of this mean little coyote-killing machine and the exact date and place of the hunt remains unknown. This could easily be the grandfather or great-grandfather of some of our readers—how cool would that be? The contrast to the kids of our time is astonishing. No helmet, no kneepads or elbow protectors, and surely no constant adult supervision. I will even bet you that his mother did not drive him to the hunt…

http://www.petersenshunting.com/2013/09/...ily+Newsletters

This was taken in Coastal Alaska around 1935. Just a few decades into the 20th century, hunting tourism had evolved into an industry catering to thousands of wealthy clients every year. The rapid development of basic infrastructure and highly sophisticated means of transportation, like cars and floatplanes, opened the last frontiers and gave wealthy hunters relatively easy access to very remote areas.

This Alaskan bush pilot is pictured in front of brown bear pelts killed by his clients in the mid 1930s. Surely, he would not want his picture to be taken with the bears bagged by his clients unless something was out of the ordinary. As I see it, there are two distinct possibilities: Either these hunters were shrewd enough to bring a midget dressed as a bush pilot to make their mediocre bear trophies seem colossal, or this is a very large bear! Unfortunately, there is no record of either the identity or the actual height of this bush pilot, but if he is six feet tall, then the bear on the left is close to an honest 10 feet
http://www.petersenshunting.com/2013/09/...ily+Newsletters

This was taken in the USA in 1908. Having your picture taken was not an everyday occurrence a century ago. In fact, many people were only photographed once or twice during their entire lifetime. Therefore, preparing yourself was of paramount importance if you wanted it to stand out among the family heirlooms.

This guy does seem to have been well prepared for the photographer, showing off his harvest of coyote pelts, his horse, and his guns. The resulting picture was printed on photographic paper in the shape of a postcard—ready to spread the word of this particular hunter’s merits. It must have been a nice carte de visite to circulate among the local belles. How tough it would be to shoot a horseful of ’yotes with an open-sighted rifle—let alone stand atop the horse and frozen saddle for the duration of the photo’s exposure. Is it all right to envy a guy who’s probably been in the ground for six decades?

Another great post by lancaster!!

You are right and the little guy just might be a relative.

My Mom's family in Nebraska hunted coyotes with greyhounds back in that time period up till about WW2.

The dogs killed a lot of the yotes with the help of horses, old Model T's and shotguns.

As for the hunter standing tall in the saddle, or rather, on it, that's a good horse, too, that will take a stack of hides like that. We have had both kinds....

More or less, you got it.

This was in the Sandhills region of Nebraska and jumping coyotes was not really that hard. Once the yote bayed up it was a melee and the yote invariably lost.

The coyotes in your pics are in pretty good shape tho many get torn up. Shot with shotguns or a .22, .25-20 or .32-20 and they aren't in bad shape at all if you can keep the dogs off them.

I do not know if anyone does that much anymore?

I know here now we have more experience with wolves, a pack of hound CAN kill a wolf. Trouble is...if a pack is running one and he joins up with a few friends, it is big trouble for the hounds.

My Dad and uncle used to chase down fox in the day and shoot them with their little .22's..saw pics of them years ago when I was back home...

As to the horses...as kids we rode our pony's every day..and did pretty much whatever with them we could imagine from chasing cattle into the next pasture to playing cowboys and indians (oopps probably shouldn't say that in todays world) ..but we could stand on all three of ours ..however we had a Palomino stud that was all jacked up ..never ever tried it on him...

As to chasing coyotes..now days, prefer to use the modern horse called the snowmobile..much more efficient.. pull up behind them with a sawed off 12 gauge..adjust for the running ..done..

My cousins in Southern Saskatchewan used 3 or 4 greyhounds and 2 mastiffs for coyote 'hunting'. They'd drive around the 'farm' until they saw some yotes, then let the hounds out.
The hounds would catch and stop the coyotes, then the mastiffs would blast through them bowling them over or throwing them into the air and the hounds and mastiffs would then kill them.

This is the story as I was told when I was a kid.

When in that area during my basic training, we (recruits) used rental cars for chasing coyotes in the fields - lots of fun - for us 'kids'. Damn hard on the cars, but a good use of adrenalin. Coyotes always got away - HA!

John Moses Browning (center) elk hunting near Jackson Hole, Wyoming around 1910. His rifle is a Remington Model 8 in .35 Remington, and he is flanked by his brother Matthew on the right. His skinning knife is in hand – no surprise that a hands-on man like JMB would do his own skinning and cleaning.

Groups say video evidence of jaguar's continued residence near Tucson shows dangers of approving copper mine

Story Highlights

Jaguars once roamed Arizona as far north as Mogollan Rim
"El Jefe" is only known specimen today roaming freely in U.S.
The state considers the area near Tucson only an occasional jaguar habitat

Arizona schoolchildren who named the country's only known jaguar "El Jefe," or "The Boss," can now view a video showing him roaming the domain he's been lording over.

The Center for Biological Diversity and research partner Conservation CATalyst on Wednesday released a video compiling views from three trail cameras that captured the jaguar last fall in the Santa Rita Mountains southeast of Tucson.

The video is continuing evidence of the only jaguar currently known to be roaming the United States, well north of a known breeding population in Sonora, Mexico.

The jaguar was first photographed in southern Arizona in 2011, and Tucson children voted to name give him the Spanish name "El Jefe." This is the first video of it to be released.

The video shows the spotted cat sitting in front of a camera at night, walking through an oak forest in daytime and traipsing over rocks by a stream.

"It's pretty exciting," said Randy Serraglio, a Tucson-based Southwest conservation representative with the Center for Biological Diversity. "He was clearly using the Santa Ritas as his home range."

Jaguars once roamed Arizona at least as far north at the Mogollon Rim, but have been only occasional occupants in the south in recent years. This is the first one documented since the 2009 death of one known as "Macho B," a male that was euthanized after being injured during trapping.

Besides providing the thrill of seeing an endangered cat virtually unknown in the U.S., Serraglio said, the video is a reminder of what's at stake if Canadian mining company Hudbay Minerals is allowed to mine copper on private and federal lands in the Santa Ritas, in the Coronado National Forest.

The proposed mine, known as Rosemont, is awaiting permits from the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently reviewing its potential effects on endangered species, which include jaguars.

"(El Jefe's) home range is ground zero for the Rosemont Copper mine," Serraglio said. "It's really going to destroy a significant part of his home."

The mining company disagreed.

"Our project will sit on roughly 5,000 acres of the 138,760 acres of the Santa Rita Mountains," Hudbay Rosemont vice president Patrick Merrin said in a written statement, "and constitutes a very small fraction of the jaguar's 50 mile-plus range. We will continue to work with the federal agencies to establish appropriate conservation and mitigation measures for the jaguar and other plants and animals."

The Arizona Game and Fish Department in 2013 signed a non-binding agreement with mine developers prescribing a number of habitat improvements to be covered by the company. It does not mention jaguars, and the state considers the area only occasional jaguar habitat.

If the mine wins necessary permits, the state and company would negotiate a binding agreement for habitat protections, said Jim deVos, who heads Arizona Game and Fish's Wildlife Management Division.

"Arizona is at the extreme northern end of jaguar range," deVos said. "There have been absences as great as 40 years without having a jaguar in Arizona."

The Santa Ritas include jaguar habitat, he agreed, but, "for the continued existence of jaguars, Arizona is insignificant."
Arizona has been home to quite a few notable animals, from a wild jaguar that launched an investigation into a state agency to two llamas that captivated the world while they were on the run. "

"A tale of two foxes

From a distance, Don could see that the red fox was chasing something across the snow. As he got closer, he realised the prey, now dead, was an Arctic fox. For three hours in temperatures of -30 degrees Centigrade Don stayed at the scene, until the red fox, finally sated, picked up the eviscerated carcass and dragged it away to store for later. In the Canadian tundra, global warming is extending the range of red foxes northwards, where they increasingly cross paths with their smaller relatives, the Arctic fox. For Arctic foxes, red foxes now represent not just their main competitor – both hunt small animals such as lemmings – but also their main predator. Few actual kills by red foxes have been witnessed so far, but it is likely that conflicts between the two mammals will become more common.

That was almost a LONG time ago, John. It was about 83 or 84. 34 years old then. WOW! who'd have thought I'd make it another 33 years?

That moose weighed in at 675 pounds in quarters, no head, no guts, no legs below the knee and no hide.

Tooth info came back 11 years old IIRC. Came in to the the previous calling, just as we were finishing lunch. Came right to the camp.

I .458'd him in the forehead - 95 yards.

LOL- just a pup in that picture. 1983 - 33yrs. old. Modern-type rifle is a VZ34 in .458 2", 68gr. H335 and a 350 gr. Hornady RN, 2,296fps mv. Shot 95 yards, from our day camp, hit above the left eye a she looked at us on a slight angle, pended the full length of the brain, through the 1st vertebrae, 2nd and 3rd, then part or all of the bullet exited the rear of the neck. I assume the bullet followed the spinal cord hole. In front of his head, laying on the moss, was a piece of jellied brain 'tissue', roughly 3/4" in diameter and 8" long. It looked like a skinny dick. I assume when the bullet passed through the back of the brain, the pressure forced this rope of brain material out the hole and it jellied, falling on the moss. I picked it up by one end and said to Taylor, "look at this, jellied brain" We had just eaten lunch, so didn't fry it up. lol

Oh yeah - 675lbs. in quarters hanging at the butcher shop, no hide. tooth came back 9 years old. Just at the edge of not breeding any more, however, he came in to the calls I had been making all morning- just took his time. There were 3 other bulls answering me for 3 hours but would not come in. Maybe I wasn't sounding sexy enough?

"Catch of the day! Whopping 900lb, 13ft alligator that feasted on livestock around a south Florida lake for 80 years is shot dead by a hunter

Mississippi hunter Doug Borries caught the largest alligator by an out of state trapper in Florida which was found to be 13ft 4inches long and 905 pounds
Borries found the monstrous creature on a private lake after being told about it from a friend who remembered the 80-year-old gator from childhood
The prized hunter shot the gator on the top of its head using his 7mm STW rifle and then grabbed the creature from the bottom of the lake
The gator's meat has since been used for processing and its head is currently mounted on Borries' wall
Borries posted the incredible find on his Facebook page last month which has received nearly 10,000 shares

By Tommy Taylor For Dailymail.Com

Published: 17:05 GMT, 4 February 2022 | Updated: 19:03 GMT, 4 February 2022

This whopping beast gives a whole new meaning to catch of the day.

A Mississippi hunter has caught and killed an 80-year-old, 905lb alligator that measures 13feet 4inches in length at a lake in southern Florida.

But even this monster - an 80-year-old who was known to feast on livestock venturing too near to its lake - isn't the largest caught in Florida. The record for the longest alligator caught goes to a 14ft 3.5inch beast caught in Lake Washington in Brevard County and the heaviest was a 1,043lb one in Orange Lake in Alachua County

Doug Borries, a seasoned hunter who owns Dynamic Outdoors TV, documented his prey on his Facebook page. He has racked up nine world records and 36 state ones for his efforts in both hunting and fishing.

He began hunting for the alligator after a friend told him about a creature he said had been around since his childhood.

The hunt for the massive alligator began for Borries after his friend told him about the creature which was reportedly around since his childhood.

'This guy said he’d seen the gator since he was a child. It was time for the gator to go because some of the calves were disappearing,' Borries told WWXV25. 'So, he was down deer hunting with me, and he asked me if I wanted to come and hunt the gator.

'I said, "Absolutely." To me it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.'
Borries found the gator on a private lake in Okeechobee County about 500 yards away using the scope of his 7mm STW rifle.

The creature was then shot at the top of its head after moving 180 yards closer to Borries.

The hunter then pulled the 80-year-old creature out of the bottom of the lake and was taken aback by its enormous size.

'I had no idea the magnitude of how big his body was until we pulled him completely out of the lake,' Borries told McClatchy News.

'It had been suspected of eating some of the local livestock around the lake and was considered a threat.'
The gator's meat has since been processed for eating and the gator's head was mounted on Borries' wall.

His Facebook post showing the huge gator also received significant attention as it has racked up nearly 10,000 shares.

Commenters, however, were polarized over the practice of hunting with some defending Borries for the impressive catch while others have criticized him for killing the creature.

Borries counteracted the criticism after noting the threat of alligators to human life referring to when two-year-old Lane Graves had been snatched and killed by one at Walt Disney World in June 2016.
