That looks a hell of a head, to me, Cowboy. I am amazed, too, how thick the cover often looks where elk are shot.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
Paul, You're right, the big bulls love the heavy cover. We were working two herd bulls
with a group of cows & got lucky on this one. I shoot a longbow (50# ACS) so I am
pretty mcuh limited to under 25 yards. This bull made the mistake of walking by me at
12 yards, so I felt very comfortable with the shot. I got a complete pass through
(lung-heart-lung) without hitting a rib on either side, he only went 60 yards & piled
up. Really nice when it works out like that!
McLeish, I am not familiar with the Douglas scoring, but on our system (P&Y, B&C?)
he scores around 332

I've killed a couple elk in days gone by. No picture-book tropies, but all hunts have been do-it-yourself with no guide or outfitter. Both kills were in the morning after backpacking into the wilderness alone to set up an ambush and staying overnight on my stand. All meat was brought home and eaten.

Here's mine from the same hunt as my moose, 2007. It went 300" and was the biggest taken on the outfitters area for the season. Northern BC.

I missed your post.
I used Stone Mountain Safaris out of Toad River, BC. I would use them again for elk/moose combo and would normally expect a better moose than the one I ended up with.
Timing was great for the elk bugle but maybe a week or so early for the moose. The guides mentioned they would usually expect and get much better moose than mine. I traveled 14,000 km's and 5 flights over a couple of days and hunted for 10 days, this was the first legal moose we found and it was the last day of my hunt.....The guide said if he was legal he wasn't very big, I said if he was legal he was coming home with me.....

My first elk in 2000, Rem. 700 Classic in .375 H&H 300gr Nosler Partitions. Put in for bull tag in AZ for years, have only drawn cow tags so far. One round through the chest, that hit nothing important but knocked her down, and one through the back of her neck that settled it.
She was at least 9 inches between the base of her ears, I guess that's the best way to measure for trophy cows.

My former First Sergeant's 750lb 4X4, taken near Craig, CO on opening day (the 16th) @ 6:10 pm, using a iron-sighted Sharps .50-140 with a 515 grain cast projectile. Broke his spine with one shot at 125 yards.
This view is from his blind/stand, dropped right center of photo.
His backup was a .270 Winchester with a 12X scope. He hadn’t exercised either weapon in 30 years and worked up his loads back in June/July.

Was out last weekend hunting on public land---saw a big bull a long ways off--could not close the distance before he was off and running and shots being fired from other hunters..did see a few other bulls..however looking for a bigger bull so took photos instead...

got to within 120 yards of these two--as I could not see the one on tops antlers until I closed the distance..

Much smaller ones are also shot, and if you have done this hunts often and in different areas, you will quickly notice it. You will definitely always be attracted by the outfitters who show the biggest trophies that have ever been shot, but that's the case for all game, even those where it's really difficult to shoot a big trophy. In addition, Elk hunting in Central Asia often requires good physical fitness as one often hunts in high mountains, and in some cases one have to shoot at long range. You cannot always be choosy about the trophy. I think that it's not different in North America.
As far as the cartridges are concerned, the Elk is a very tough game, especially the deer in the rutting season and that's why, also because one have sometimes to shoot at longer range, bigger magnum calibers or similar are recommended. I was very satisfied with cartridges like the 9,3x64 Brenneke or 340 WBY-Magnum and heavy bullets, less so with high performance cartridges like the 300 RUM and lighter bullets. I experienced how big Elk deer were shot with cartridges like the 7mm Rem Mag, but it was not that easy.

I'd use my 8x68S probably with 200 gr bullets. Maybe one day. 2020 was supposed to be the year. The panicdemic prevented that.

In 8mm, the 196gr. Norma yellow tip dual core is an exceptional bullet, for moose as well. I'm not sure they still make it, though.
My buddy Keith has shot a lot of moose with that one, in his 8x68S.
