very nice find for the collector just to have it - but I think its not the very best C&H quality for nitro for black express cartridges. iirc, this powder was named No. 6?
when did they stop business?

There's no warnings, addresses, phone numbers or anything on the can. Back and sides are completely red. In the 90's there would have been mandatory warnings at the least.

Those cans with the pull-up spouts are the same my bro and I bought in the late 50's through 60's. Seems to me, by the 70's when I was buying C&H powder with the same outside can but with screw tops.
I do not recall warnings on the cans fo C&H we bought in the 70's & 80's.
It was not as good a powder as GO (gerheart ownes) or GOEX or even Dupont. On the same 'front/level' as "Meteor" which was made in Scotland.
Perusing Lyman's Black Powder Handbook of the 70's will also show this.

these don't have a spout. Has a rubber plug. When I get back to my table this morning I'll take a photo of the top of the one without the paper seal. Just a rubber plug in the hole.

Looks like a plug. Pull it up and it stops(flange), tilt the
can and powder pours out of the rubber "spout" just as it
shows - or you can pull it all the way out & it will pour
more quickly.

In my experience the later C&H black powder tins were opaque plastic with a fairly wide black lid.
I too despair that no-one seems to be able to make a non-hygroscopic "smokeless" bulk equivalent to black powder.
Pyrodex is as "corrosive" as black, and all the BlackMax, 777, BlackMagic etc etc ad infinitum that have followed are no better.
I wish I could stumble on a hidden cache of C&H No.6 coz I'd have a permanent silly grin on my face!

All of the C&H I have ever bought, was in steel cans.
The C&H I burned in the 70's and 80's is/was not as good as the GO or GOEX or even DuPont black powder. It is lower powered and needed considerably more of it to make the same speeds.
T7 or 777 is probably the best of the phony's even though it says (MSDS) that it contains perchlorates. According to Bill Knight, who actually analyzed it, it does not have that corrosive substance in it. He stated that if he could not obtain real BP, he would use T7. He figured that Hodgdon simply used the Pyrodex MSDS sheet when they developed it.
Black Mag 3 and Pyrodex do contain perchlorates however and their fouling is excessively hydroscopic and corrosive with just residual moisture. It actually has an affinity for iron molecules and seems to dissolves them.
As with ANY phony powder, good cleaning practices MUST be adhered to. some guys who use them, say they re-clean their guns for 3 days afterwards, re-cleaning them to make sure they get ALL that fouling out of the bore's pores.
Oh yes - wouldn't a cache of #6 be nice to have.

read all about this substitute powder , never was convinced
cleaning seems to be worse than real black powder and that would be the point you not looking for.
tripple seven is maybe the best of them.
I think by myself that it must be possible to develop a nitro bulk powder that gives the same amount of gas than common black powder grain by grain.

Here is some hearsay rumors. Take them for what they are. I and my son are big into the high power rocketry business/hobby. We have a friend who is one of the larger dealers of rocket motors, both high power and BP motors. He has connections to Estes who bought out GOEX. Estes sent one of their people to Louisiana to rebuild the BP plant which had burnt. He said that he was amazed at some of the machinery which was over 100 years old but apparently had been doing the job. It has been a big job. The progress toward the rebuild is proceeding and they are thinking production will restart in the spring.
As you may or may not know Estes rocket engines are BP and they have a big need for it but you might not know that the US Govt buys a lot of it for the military and other uses. In fact the govt has contributed a fairly large investment in Estes to get the plant up and running. It's considered a strategic resource and local supplies are important.
Well as I said the above is just rumor until the plant actually starts again. I also suspect that it could be awhile until supplies reach us common folks.

wrote this before when goex close the door. in allmost any artillery ammo there is also blackpowder as a starter load for the main nitro powder charge. most peole don't know it.
if the us government let goex die for ever they had to buy black powder from china what they would not like in the end.
I am sure the chinese make a lot of this stuff maybe in a cottage industry across the country, not in the quality of swiss black powder - of course! there is a lot of need for black powder, its even used for some special blow up work in mines today.

Wano, in Germany is the maker of the black powder I am currently using, packaged as Scheutzen. It (I think) is also packaged as Graff's, who sell powders in the States and ship (mail OR TRUCK) black powder anywhere in the USA.
The more you buy, the cheaper it is due to there being only one "hazmat fee" per shipment.
In my .69, I had to increase the powder charge of this 2F Wano powder to get the same grouping as the current GOEX.
