Original Stalking Rifle Dimensions

Finally got a line on a couple barrels and breech plugs for my stalking rifle build. Would anyone know of a resource for dimensions of original stalking rifles, specifically weights and barrel dimensions?

You could try trackofthewolf. I don't know if their 'instructions' for the Purdey come with dimensions of 'expected' barrel or not. Likely not.

Trooper, What caliber weight and length of the barrels and where did you find them? Are you building a "Stalking" rifle or a "Stopping" rifle????

I've got a Ed Rayl 10 Bore swamped barrel on order, eta is October. Also waiting on parts for a 20 bore Alexander Henry replica stalking rifle. Then considering possibly splitting the difference with a 14 bore. So many stalking rifles and so little time and money but I've got plenty of wild boar (North American Rhino's)that need ventilating with big holes.

Trooper, if you have a surplus of wild boar in your neck of the woods, I may be able to get a couple genuine rifles in your hands - depending of course where you are located.
If you have a 10b barrel on order, my 8bore Rodda could serve as a template. It is a little brutish and I’d think that the 10 could be built a bit lighter in the wood.
I also have an Alex Henry 450 and a newish A. Henry style rifle done by Lowell Manly which is set up as more of a match rifle without a rear sight on the barrel, just the tang mounted vernier sight.
Still, either of these with a heavy conical would be superb on pigs!
I’d say that deciding early on if you prefer a straight wood grip with iron furniture or an actual pistol grip stock will help,you lay out what your eye tells you is correct. Of course, both are correct but personal preference will help in this decision.
I do think personally that a straight grip allows you to keep a good heavy amount of wood in the wrist where a straight grain flow will give you the strength you need without needing to find a blank that accommodates the shape of a pistol grip.
Then, with that good strong wrist, the limiting factor in load development is your own shoulder!
I’ve shot my 8bore at 240grs powder which is good for me although the service charge was closer to 300 if I remember correctly.

According to Greener, The Gun etc - the 8 bore's standard load was 10 drams. (273/4gr.)

England kit is what I'm waiting on, he's refining the stock duplicating, as I understand, and doesn't have the stalking rifle kit quite right yet.

I'm located in Louisiana and have more than a surplus, more like a plague. I would like to get the dimensions of your rifle. You are welcome to come down bring your rifles, have some good food, and perform penetration tests until your shoulder is tender.

Trooper,
The black powder stalking rifles I have seen all have barrels between 26" and 28" and length of pull of around 14". The Henrys that I have had used 27" barrels. My 17 ga Barnes ML DR has 28" barrels.
For the wood, what I have done is to "blow up" a copy of an English rifle so that the stock has a LOP of 14" and use that.
Huvius has good comments about straight vs pistol grip stock. Regardless of which style suits you, I suggest the grain of the stock be straight in the pistol grip, particularly for the large bore rifles you are building.
Is your twist rate selected for round balls or conicals? .
Post some pictures of your hog hunts. Also what part of Louisiana are you located in? I had gone hog hunting in the Slidell and Honey Island Swamp in the 1960 but there were not many hogs then.

I do have a fondness for the straight stocks, only thing I used in my old bird hunting days. Located in the northwest part of the state close to Red River.
