Big gun, small deer

Spent some more time chasing big bucks, no luck on them but I did put this guy in the freezer with my 14 bore William Moore belted ball gun.

Great gun and nice shooting.
With a stalking safety and a set trigger. That gun check a bunch of boxes right there.

Very nice - well done. That rifle is in really nice shape - almost as nice as my Bro's Joseph Lang.

Would you please send me (or post) more pictures of it for my file if you have them, please?

PM or E-mail would work too. That is a really nice rifle.

Weight of ball, patch thickness, powder charge - inquiring minds would like to know.

bouldersmith,

OUTSTANDING! The rifle and results. Would you be so kind as to provide the external barrel measurements? I'm doing some research for a stalking rifle project myself.

Many Thanks

Congratulations, Bouldersmith; I don't think size matters in that case and I hope you enjoyed your hunting to the full!

bullet energy is maybe between .223 and 308 win so you did no overkill

what distance do you shoot? was the deer dead immediately?

a very nice rifle, everyone would like to have

Waidmannsheil, Bouldersmith.

Some good venison for the table. And taken with a nice old traditional method and gun.

BTW I don't think a 14-bore BP ML would be all that big excessive or over gunned for deer? Quite an appropriate calibre?

I think so, however a 14 bore does "stagger" moose at 100yards.
My buddy's .75 (11 bore), on the other hand, might be a bit of an overkill, on deer.

Overgunned?
Maybe, but the deer don't seem to know (or care) if they die from a ball bigger then needed.
