BIG Balls

Im still think about those 8 Bore and 4 Bore Muzzle loading rifles. I was talking about them to some hunting friends last evening. These guys are buddies but they just dont understand any need for anything bigger than a 308 Win, and why would I want a ML to hunt Hogs....

One did ask where I could get balls that big> Is there a source for balls already cast that size or do I need a mold? Any idea who cuts molds that big?

Re: BIG Balls

That would take some serious moulds to drop those suckers!

Yeah, .850" - quite moderate in size - NOT! That would be somewhere around 925 to 930gr. in pure lead - a decently sized round ball.

Re: BIG Balls

What is the diameter of a golf ball?

What would the bore have to be to shoot a patched golf ball?

Light load, when you don't need full power lead loads!

Re: BIG Balls

A golfball is 1.680 inches. A lead ball cast to THAT size is roughly 1 pound.

I dont recommend shooting actual golf balls. They BOUNCE. Trust me, shooting a golf ball from a cannon is "exciting" unless you are sure they will hit SOFT dirt.

Heres my 1 pounder. Its modeled after the Soviet B-11 Recoilless Rifle but scaled to a golfball. I used a 1 lb round fishing weight mold for balls.

Im all about a 8 Bore and 4 Bore rifle but even I wonder about a golfball size rifle. It seems to me if you want more then you want something like THIS...

Re: BIG Balls

1.75" bore would about handle a 14 ounce denim patch nicely with a .168" golf ball.

My chart shows 1.671" as being 1 pound (7,000gr.) in a pure lead round ball.

Re: BIG Balls

Posted this on another thread as well but just wanted to give my endorsement to ballmoulds.com

Got my .835” mold from ballmoulds.com and now my Rodda will be hurling these 852gr balls of lead downrange soon!

Here, next to the puny 12bore ball.

What is the bore size of the Rodda, Huvius?
Ah- I see in the other thread, it has an .850" bore.
Scrubbing rough bores with a square of maroon Scotch Brite on a jag, with a little oil on it can work wonders on rough bores. Full length strokes.

That was quick!

I look forward to seeing how the Rodda runs for you.

I did just that and it really did smooth out the bore quite a bit.
In fact, I wish I had done that earlier - may have opted for a bit larger ball.
As it is, a patched lubed ball slid down rather smoothly which is nice but may require a thicker patch - oh well, we’ll have to see.
I’m used to loading a paper patched bullets that just slide down the bore with a nice push. Is that OK with a patched ball or should I use a thicker patch to give it tighter fit?
Was hoping to get out today but that plan got derailed by work...
Will have a report soon enough.
