Carleton Rifle Build

The Carleton underhammer is know for it's sliding hammer.
Well, I have 6 fast twist Big Bore blanks [1-58, 4-62s, 1-69] that need to be finished. Had them too long, time to do something with them.
I have a flock of underhammers .32-7ga. Thought I would try something even more different.
The Carleton is a slam fire, triger holds the bolt back. Pull the trigger Slam, Blam!
The brass receiver is milled for the hammer.
Quick change barrel system is done.
Hammer is coil spring fired, not the trigger guard.[nearly done.]
The slide in trigger guard and trigger need to be made.
I have several ideas for a half cock, but haven't decided yet.[simple is best]
Oh, wood.....I have some rough sawed.
Will update progress, not ready for pictures.

Interesting indeed. The barrel would need enough weight so the hammer did not jar it even though it appears a very short throw.

Daryl, mine is a larger version. The picture just shows the idea.
Mine is much more robust!
I use a large bolt thru the stock, just in case you need a club or a boat oar!

Had to make a collar stop for the mill. Ground a cutter and made a holder.
The brass cut easy for the trigger guard to fit into.

A .69 pistol would be rather interesting. I use a .682" Pedersoli mould for mine (looks like Lyman blocks) that cast 482gr. RB's in pure lead for my sporting rifle.
I also have a 15 bore mould (.677") by Tanner Moulds that casts around 466gr. in pure and 445gr. in old WW.

Daryl, it's more of a Low Wall receiver design. But once the rifle is done, then it may be time for a pistol!

Trigger and sear are working.
The "rubber bands" fire the hammer, now to make a drum and fit a nipple!

Fired some caps today!
Tried two different rubber bands, they both worked!

Very innovative.
What sort of spring system do you have in mind? Operating from the above angled action
or from the front of the TG?
Depending on the hammer's 'throw', it would not have to be a long one.

Daryl, why use springs when you just move the rubber bands aside to cap!
Need to have some fun!
All is done, use three different rate springs, and they all fired the Musket cap.
I like the bigger caps, bigger hole leading to the touch hole means more fire in the hole!!
The front of the trigger guard will be the Half cock pin. [Safety]
When cocking it will release the half cock.
Just very happy that it works, Going to make a very sturdy and durable "oar"...or club!
I think the .69 cal will be first!
Brass tube thimbles and grip, like my 73 cal.

I was just curious about lock time.
My 73 UH has a distance of about 1" for the hammer to hit the cap.
The Carleton will have about 1/2", half the distance.
But the flame has farther to travel, to the main charge.
Humm!

A miniscule difference, I assume. How often do you think you will have to replace the elastic bands due to flame release from the nipple?
Of course with good nipples, there should be no flash released.
Big hole in the .73 cal. Is that only a 1" bl?
I remember your paper ctgs. experiments.
Bobinthewoods (ALR) uses them in his 10 bore.

I just had to add the rubber band for humor!
The 73 barrel is 1.1/8 x 1" taper!
Balances at the grip, just in front of the nipple.
It is a great gun to carry at 8#s.
Early wide butt plate helps with the kick.
Stock is shaped after your English Sporter!
I my opinion, the large bore English Sporter is the GREATEST Hunting rifle ever designed!!!

The Carleton Rifle will have the same English Sporter stock dimensions.

Yes - the sporter design is the ultimate & points like a shotgun. Good choices.
