got a really decent buy at an auction a day ago.

I wasn't looking or a muzzle loader but I couldn't let it go for $130. Blanch 16 bore. Looks like the rib might have been re-soldered but it has some nice wood on it.

If the bores are good I would relay the ribs. Nice buy.

Looks nice on the outside. How are the bores?
Should drop the rod down the barrels to ensure its not got an old load still in it.
Good buy!

That is a bloody steal !! as suggested drop a rod down the barrels and see if it's loaded. Nice quality gun, and maybe a shooter !!

Looks good. First barrel was a misfire. Seems a common enough happening. With my .58 I try again with a new cap. I think I might have had to once remove a projectile and powder. Not something I like having to do.

One has got to like all that smoke.

If possible find someone who can relay that top rib. Should be a nice gun, and as I stated earlier, a real steal !! I have a nice W&C Scott 12 bore double percussion gun, have taken a lot of duck and rabbits with it. 2 3/4 drams of Fg with an ounce and a 1/4 of no 4. You seem to need to use heavier shot in a muzzle loader than you might do in a cartridge gun. The heavier shot seems to retain velocity for longer and more knock down.

2 3/4 drams of 1F and 1 1/4 oz of 4's is an excellent load for a m/l shotgun!
The use of 1F powder keeps the pattern quite a bit tighter than does the finer grained powders in a cylinder bore gun.

Remember the old saying: "Little powder, much lead, shots far, kills dead."

2 3/4dr.1F GOEX + 1 1/4oz. 7 1/2's shoots best in my new damascus "Field London" 12 bore ctg. gun with hammers. Modest engraving and very nice condition.
I'll be using it at rendezvous for the trap and quail walk shoots.

Mine is a 16. Using 2 1/4drams and 1 oz. Patterns well at 30 yds.

Re: got a really decent buy at an auction a day ago.

Sounds good. In my 1899 Model 20 Husky 16 bore, I used a full 3 drams 1F and 1oz, but it had a mod. choke and shot full choke patterns, just over 70%.

Re: got a really decent buy at an auction a day ago.

With cartridge guns of 12 gauge and under that have a significant amount of choke in the barrels I tend to use 2F and sometimes 3F to get the patterns I want.
1F in a choked barrel can produce extremely tight patterns.

Re: got a really decent buy at an auction a day ago.

I'm using 1F in my 12 bore London hammer gun with decent patterns for cylinder bores. Wish we could get Ely ctgs. today.
They can be made, but easier in muzzleloaders than in ctg. guns.
