Rescue of a couple old rifles
|
I was handed a couple of rusty kit rifles the other day.
Both assembled.
.45 flint full stock, looks like early CVA Kentucky (original owner scribed '76 Dean-Built on the side plate), and a .50 caplock, an early CVA Mountain Rifle with 66 twist barrel and four screw patch box.
I've revived the caplock. Took a lot of barrel attention.
The flinter will take a lot more work.
Broke out the bear oil, my hands smell so damn good.
I want to get out in timber for black bear now...

That CVA might be a good shooter - some do very well.

The CVA caplock does indeed shoot very nicely.
I edited the original post to note the flinter appears to be a CVA kit too, from the mid-70's.
Soon as I get the patch/lube combination down we'll see just how well the .50 does, but so far it looks good.
Bore looked horrible, but after Kriol and brushing and 4o steel wool and Kroil and patches and pressure and sweat...
Relieved the edges at the muzzle as per your thumb and abrasive cloth method - loads nicely and rams smooth too.
I just got in from the shop where I gave the little .45 flint barrel the same treatment. It is starting to take shape as well. It has a similarly slow twist as the CVA too, which I find pleasing.

Scotch-Brite/oil or solvent on a jag is really good at slicking up bores that might show some neglect.
Good news about the .45.
With slippery oil patches, mine (42" GM Barrel) liked both 75gr. 3F and 85gr. 2F with .445" balls and 10 ounce denim(.022"). Both loads chronographed 2,240fps.
I like to develop loads for both 3F and 2F in my rifles as sometimes I run out of one of them.
With water based lubed for target shooting, dropping those loads by 10gr. worked as well. The vel. for those was in the 1,750fps range. There was a big change in vel. with the winter windshield washer fluid and a bit of Neetsfoot oil(about 1oz per 6 oz. WWWF). We add the oil just to slow the evapouration in the summer time. We call it WWWF+Oil.
It is used on precut patches, shaken then applied to them in a tin (Sucrets tins work), or a Track's snuff, fire-starting tool or glasses cases. Any water proof tin can be used. Speer bullet boxes in the smaller sizes also work - but are bright yellow.

Just finished the day's chores, got to the workshop to screw the flint rifle back together.
Touched a couple 50gr charges off for effect.
8:00pm, not bad.
Now for a martini...

Never fell for the photobucket BS, but I had been using Flickr.
Flickr changed their arrangements some time back and complicated matters to the point where I walked off.
