4-Bore rifle build

Good day members
A friend of mine Herman Nel is building a 4 Bore black powder rifle. I thought sharing photos will be good. The match box is to give scale to the photos of the rifle only.
The barrel is grooved and made in Birmingham.

Name Birmingham name engraved on the barrel:

Action is made by a well known gunsmith family from the cape in the 1800 era:

I definitely will be the first person to shoot this four bore, I already arranged it with my friend Herman Nel...

Will upload photos as progress is made with the build, Herman Nel is a master rifle builder ....

A stout frame of mind will be needed to tame that one Gert. 4 oz of lead will take a few handfulls of BP to get it running at a decent clip. You will have to video the "shoot" for us.

Sarg, you are more than welcome when visiting, the rifle is being build by Herman Nel , residing in Nylstroom/Modimolle , Limpopo...

Talking about a carriage build...here are some photos of a canon he build, it seems about the same size as the 4-bore...

Interesting gun when finished with all those original parts.

Make sure you safely "proof" the 4-bore before firing it from the shoulder. I would not attempt the 'standard' 4-bore charges of 12 to 16 drams from that original barrel. You might find 10 drams or 273gr. is quite 'enough'. This should keep the pressure down to a low enough level.

Looking forward to viewing the firing Gert, it should be impressive!

Herman has done a lekker job on the cannon carriage, getting the spokes trued is a lost skill.

Cheers

Herman Nel is a craftsman in his one league, it is a privilege to work with him on projects. He is a very good friend as well and always willing to share his vast knowledge bank with anyone who is interested to learn something new. I will upload videos of shooting the 4-Boer rifle when he complete it.
