Absoluteuly amazing piece of maple, Steve. Good staining, too.
Aquafortis?

Thanks Ash

Hi Daryl
No, I don't think I used aquafortis. If I recall, that was an alcohol based stain but now I can't remember which one.

That's going to be quite a step up from a 50.

$1,600.00 is cheap, too.

Steve - when do you decide you need to increase to 2 wedges? Is it to do with recoil factor (I guess more wedges spreads load out) and stock length?

Re: Have a 62 cal Hawken to sell

No Ash It's just that original St Lewis Hawken rifles had 2 wedge keys most of the time, so I put them into my recreations.
If we look at the British large bore rifles of the same period, most had only one, so we can safely say 2 are not necessary, but they don't harm anything wither.

Jake and Sam Hawken used 2, so I do when I make a rifle like the ones they did.

An Original Hawken, this one with a pistol grip.

On the other hand, as Steve noted, an English styled rifle.

The Flinters, though, usually had 2 as on this one.
