A new Hawken Build

by my Brother, Taylor.

The Inspiration - an Original Pistol Grip S. Hawken circa maybe 1830-40's:

The Finished Rifle in .62 Cal.
Threads on the Aperture sight are 80 TPI, the same as the original:

Re: A new Hawken Build

The finish is beeswax only - no oils or varnish - steel parts are colour cased, first time for Taylor - turned out just fine. The barrel is rust blued as-is the tang and aperture due to the aperture being hard silver soldered to the tang. The under rib is solder filled at it's nose, but is riveted to the barrel.

Easy loading for us, with a .0235" railroad mattress ticking patch and .613" ball. The rifling is .012" deep - quick test for function, finished off with a nice 1" group (4 out of 5) with one flyer at 50yards, 1st July, Canada Day. About 30 shots fired to test function, no wiping required during the shooting, spit for lube and rifle's rod used for loading.

Very nice rifle Daryl! I am fortunate to have one of Taylor's Hawken's that he built back in the 80's. Mine is 54 cal. Al

Wow - long time ago, Al. He just came into possession of a "Robinson" Hawken he build in the 80's as well - unfired. I might have to see what I can do in a trade for a .32 Tenn. Squirrel rifle? HA!

I love the stock ; where did you ever get a blank for it? I liked the fact the rifle is made with the traditional flame hard Maple stock , and if my guess is correct ,it was stained with Ferric Nitrite (Iron Nitrate)which is the way the old time stock makers stained Maple

Daryl; The Hawken I have was a custom build, 30 in. bbl. and some other small changes. It won a gold medal for the previous owner at the B.C. summer games several years ago. I sent Taylor some pictures of it a couple of years back. It's a real pleasure to shoot. Al

Re: A new Hawken Build

TKS for that note, Al - I like the Hawken rifles, but in smaller calibres. The hooked butt plate does not lend itself to comfortable shooting in larger calibres with the amount of powder needed to make them perform at the ranges I demand - well past 50yards.

Ferric Nitrate is indeed the stock treatment, after which heat/flame is needed to bring out the colour.

It's a rather mildly tiger striped piece of wood. He has built much more colourful maple stocks in the past.

Bit of walnut to set the stage - my 14 bore.

This is his own .62 Hawken hunting AND target rifle, built a few years back and used to take his last couple moose.

Steutzen .60

Bedford County .40

This slim Kuntz .40 won a few ribbons in the Master class at Dixon's Gun Maker's Fair

A. Verner, only a few years old.

A .54 English rifle built many years ago.

20 bore Fowler

To top it off, a nice side by side in English Walnut.

Pretty nice rifle. What barrel was used in the build? I have always wanted a 58 or bigger rifled stuffer.

My first "paradox" a 12 bore trade gun

Re: A new Hawken Build

Coleraine ( www.trackofthewolf.com ) - 34" long, 1 1/8" breech X about 1.0325 muzzle (was 1" at 36") - rifle weighs 9.9 pounds and is just over a pound lighter than the rifle Taylor built for himself(second one).

12 bore flinters ARE fun to shoot - trap and birds with shot along with moose or elk with balls.

The first moose Taylor shot with a round ball gun, was with a .715" ball from his 11 bore (.75") Lyman Italian Brown Bess (early 1980's) - 100gr. 2F at approximately 100yards.

The ball stopped on the far side after holing both lungs- leaving just over a 3" tubular hole through them - I still have the in my collection, expanded out like a 1/4" thick disk well over 1" in diameter. The moose walked some 15 yards and dropped dead while he was reloading.
