S, Hakwen Makes Meat

Brother Taylor with his guide & taxidermist Tammy.
The moose is a 2 1/2 year old. He went into the freezer yesterday, all cut up and wrapped. Winter's meat! (and summer's too)

Rifle 11 1/2 pounds .62 S. Hawken built 3 years ago. Load .612" pure lead ball, 10 ounce Denim patch (.022"), 130gr. 2f GOEX Gun (black) Powder. The range was just over 100 yards, seems to me. Taylor has been practicing with this particular rile once a week for the last 6 months or so, on our bush trail.

Re: S, Hakwen Makes Meat

Here is the rifle. The bottom picture, the rear sight, is taken/copied from the original S. Hawken Taylor built this rifle to emulate. The sight has since been replaced with a wide "V" Express-type sight as that is a better hunting sight for the 'bush'. This rifle's only finish, is beeswax - stock heated, wax applied, heated and applied, etc, etc until the stock would not absorb any more - then buffed. It is not sticky and does not absorb ANY water. It is also VERY easily re-applied using the hot air blower used for shrinking model airplane wing and fuselage coverings.
The barrel tapers either 1 1/8" to 1" at the muzzle.
Taylor built this rifle to compete against my 14 bore at 200yards. It does very well indeed, but has yet to beat the big girl for score - maybe next summer. I have witnessed Taylor put 5 consecutive shots into 2 1/2" off the bags at 200yards with this rifle. There was no wind, of course. On another occasion, it managed 5 shots into 3". These were with the full buckhorn sight as pictured, which is used as an aperture sight.
The barrel is rust blued, as-is the rear sight. The other steel parts are cased, as-was the original.
