Colour Case Hardening

Has anyone had their Mauser 98 colour case hardened ? Is their much more of an additional cost compared to 'normal' blueing and how have they found the logevity of the process ?

Cheers.

Re: Colour Case Hardening

I have a few of mine done in CC's, and they look, and last really well. They apply a lacquer finish afterwards that protects the delicate finish. A much better look than simple blue.

Doug Turnbull is a specialist CC. Give him a yell.

I aked Doug about doing one of mine this past June and was refused, saying he won't do Mausers as they tend to warp.
If you do contact him it would be interesting to see if you get the same responce.

I don't know how practical it would be for you to send a gun to the US to do it, but here is a recommendation from my side - Dave Norin a very good friend does superb work. There are some British gunmakers in the US who use his services to get their restoration projects case hardened. He is especially good at recreating the look of traditional British guns and Mausers, Enfields and Model 70s are the only bolt actions that he works on.

Do check his website out, too.

Cheers!

Doug Turnbull in the USA, St Ledger in UK and I think it is spelt Jorge Schilling in Austria (I think) are the best three in the world I am repeatedly told by gunsmiths and those in the trade. best, Mike

Seem to remember Mialls at Frankston do CCH - you could try them.

Come on, MIke, no reason to be sorry.

I have to stress this because of how many times I get things wrong myself.

Your post is much appreciated. I just remembered the Schilling website and thought I'd post the link here.

Good hunting!

Actually, it is Jorg.

Alfred was Jorg's grandfather.

Here's another picture of one. Again, this is not my gun - just a picture.

Tophet 1

Here are a couple of photos of Miall's cch. The photos aren't the best but might give you some idea. The colours are more subdued in person.

Cheers.
