"Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

When I was at the SHOT Show in Melbourne this year, I purchase a couple of stock blanks from Roger Vardy.

One was to be used to re-stock my .30-06 and this is being done by Ross Waghorn of Melbourne.

The other, an exhibition grade stock, I fell in "love" with. With its rich colours. For some reason it made be think of the lovely coat of a tiger. So doing a deal with Roger I arranged for it to be put aside for me and I now have it in my possession.

The project I have in mind is to build a Mauser 98 actioned rifle in a calibre popular in India during the grand hunting days of the sub-continent.

Have a look at this stock blank:

What calibres do you think would be suitable for it?

They should be chamberings that were popular in India in the first half of the previous century (ie 1900 to 1950). Possibly big bore chamberings but more likely to be medium calibres from .300 to .400.

Tell me what you think!

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Very nice indeed. Make a nice .35 or .375 Whelen or Whelen Imp. Of course, a 9.3x62 would also fit well being almost identical to an improved '06 case in case capacity.

Some good suggestions, some of which I had thought of.

The .318 WR and the .333 Jeffrey have appeal.

The .350 Rigby Magnum was probably popular in India as well.

Keep up the suggestions. What calibres are mentioned by the various Indian hunter writers?

Re: Corbetts rifle

I believe one of Corbetts favourite rifle was in .275 Rigby; received as a gift for killing the Champawat man eater in 1907, from the Governor (of U.P), Sir John Hewett (I am of the understanding that this is the same as the 7x57 - not sure if they are interchangeable?)I believe Bell (in Africa) used the 7x57 a great deal. So you have a calibre used by two very famous and highly respected hunters. The Rigby name also has the nostalgia factor. Perhaps this is one to consider.
Just realised there is the thread about Jim Corbetts rifle in this section. I was looking through a reproduction of an old Rigby catalogue, dated 1924, that I have. Their model 4 rifle is in 350 Rigby magnum and below the details of the calibre is a picture of a Tiger; I guess to indicate its suitablility for that animal. Don't know how difficult 350 Rigby brass is to find?

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

One of the famous Rigby calibers (275, 303, 350, 416) would certainly be appropriate. After all, Rigby started the whole British made Mauser thing in 1898 when Mauser introduced the 98 action. They were the exclusive distributor for Mauser from 1898 to 1912. This was the height of tiger hunting for the British Raj in India. Eliminate the 303 because it is a rimmed round. The 350 Magnum action was developed exclusively for Rigby in 1905 and the 416 appeared in 1912.

John,

Beautiful piece of wood.

I would do a 9.3x62 Mauser. That was the mainstay of the African continent, and I feel sure it got a lot of use in India too.

By the way, it is an outstanding cartridge in its own right!

John,

That is a superb stock in the making and you have the Marlene Dietrich of rifles waiting to be made!

The 30-06, 318, 333 Jeff, 6.5x57, 7x57 and 300 H&H were all popular in India. Any of these done in the classic British style stock would be a superb rifle indeed. You're going to give a lot of people here insomnia waiting for thie beauty to be built.

Good luck and good hunting!

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Well my first choice is still my last choice.

The .318 Westley Richards. One of WDM Bell's favourite rounds and a great killer of game in Africa.

From the Westley Richards website:

.318 Westley Richards

250 grain Soft Nose or Solid Bullet
Muzzle Velocity 2400 ft/sec Energy 3200 ft/lbs BL 26"

Woodleigh makes a 250 gr RNSP Weldcore and FMJ, and Bertram makes a 180 gr SP, and 250 gr soft point at a cheaper price. Maybe some .338 bullets can be swaged down as well.

Brass can be made from .30-06 brass.

I like the 8x68S, .338/06, .318 WR, .333 Jeffrey range of cartridges for medium game, and the .318 is also a classic.

Gentlemen, however please update this thread as you might read different Indian hunting books. I am more than interested in recording what calibres were predominantly in use in India. Thanks.

Yes I was interested when Bruce Bertram told me he was making 180 gr SPs in .330 for the .318 WR. They should prove a good bullet for lighter medium game like pigs and goats for practice. Not sure how they are constructed but would find out. However this is a "long term" project and knowing custom gunsmithing times several years before a shot is fired!

I will probably use a Mauser 98 action I have in stock. An FN Columbian Mauser 98 action in good condition. Currently it is equipped with a .30-06 stepped barrel.

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Hi John, My name is Ashok. I was born in India & now am a Kiwi for the last 15 years. I am a new member on this site. My dad was a forestry & widlife manager from 1947 to 1983. He was a passionate hunter turned conservationist & was the Chief Wildlife warden of Tamil Nadu state in South India for a while. He shot 2 tigers in 1952 & 53 - he used an Astra 12 bore hammer gun (new) with "lethal ball" Elley ammo. Both were females at 9ft 6in "between pegs". They were killing cattle belonging to the forestry staff & dad had to either shoot them or see them poisoned (pesticide in the kill) by the locals. I still have old photos but the skins were not well preserved. He also bought a 423 Mauser (10.75X68) FN rifle in 1957 (after I was born). He shot 2 leopards with that rifle - both big males 7ft 6in "between pegs" which was considered a great trophy even then. One skin was ruined in transit & the other still hangs on the wall of a cousin's house (it was gifted to my grand dad & then it went down the line of male heirs!). This was done by the famous taxidermists Van Ingins of Mysore.

Let me confess that I am not at all experienced in the above subject but have been passionate about it since I was 12 years old, when dad sold his firearms in 1968!

Your stock looks stunning & I would suggest the following calibers only because they are what dad's friends used in the mid tom late 60's before all legal hunting stopped in India. The bolt action rifles I can remeber are 375H&H, 404 Jeffrey, 318 WR (I know an old friend from college who has one & I haven't seen him for 30 years - may be I should call on him!), 423 Mauser, 416 Rigby and the 9.5X57 Mannlicher Schoenauer (375 express). This was the era after Jim Corbet & he used double rifles for most of his tiger shooting. I had never heard of the 9.3s in India (though I bought a Simson & sohon here in NZ & am having it refurbised). My caliber for nostalgia would be either the 318WR or the 404 Jeffrey. I still hope to track down dad's 423 some day! He is now 83 & not too well, but still congratulated me on my nice black bnear (brown phase) I got last month in BC.

Good luck on your project.

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Ashok

Thanks for your comments and stories.

The 10.75x68 (or a .404) would be a strong contender if I was more interested in a big bore chambering. In this case I am leaning to a medium bore so I can use it more at home.

Are you able to can the old photos? If so it would be really great to see any old photos from India's hunting days. Plus any from the era of interest on other related subjects. I can host the photos for you if needed, send me a PM if you need them hosted.

Now that you live in NewZealand with its relatively liberal gun laws, yes it would be great for you to track down any family firearms. Lots of hunting to enjoy them with in NZ (but no tigers ) !

Not being of sound mind, I am actually keen on this project becoming a takedown rifle project and in the end two chamberings/calibres, one in .318 Westley Richards, and the second barrel in .275 Rigby/7x57mm. Subject to being able to source a suitably figured piece of walnut matching well enough the original stock colour and figure. Stocked to match the forend design of the early 1900's but modified to allow good scope use with a higher comb.

I am keen to see something at least get started on this finally, but the never ending saga still really has not even begun.

Yes I agree, don't use that action. it's not worthy of that wood.
Although it's probably a smooth functional action, when it's finished you will hate it. Sledgehammer markings ruined all those Famage actions for custom use.
Keep you eye out for a better one, there are still plenty around.

Hi NitroX,
I have to agree with the above 2 comments. I didn't like to say anything at first as I thought it may be taken as presumptuous.
Now that it has been said, there are still plenty of better 98 actions getting around. I'd be looking for an FN or one of the better contract rifles built for one of the South American countries. The small extra cost in the dollars spent on a custom build will not be remembered in future years, but if you use the Famage, every time you look at it you will regret it.

The case head is similar enough. I already have a quantity of .318 WR brass, believe it or not. But .30-06 brass can also be used I believe.

I would think the cartridge length would be similar enough. But the length of a .318 WR with 250 gr projectiles. how different would that be?

John,
for a 7x57 an intermediate action would be most appropriate, take small ring action if that floats your boat. 318 W-R, 3006 and 8x64S etc. requires a standard action. A 7x57 on model 21/22 Brno would be sweet

Here used actions are cheap and not very difficult to find unless you want a Oberndorf with squarebridges etc.
A Mauser action made today would be in the ballpark of 3K + Euros.

Something like this, https://www.usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=77245
if it is what I think, the last of the FN military rifles made in the 50's. Good actions although not '"c-ring".
$500, wreck and sell barrel & stock, say $150 depending, makes a nice action for $350.
Or just try for an '09 Arg. action only with hinged F/P for $500-6-7 ish. Getting harder to get these days but they do turn up from time to time.
Like anything, buyer beware of backyard gunsmiths, they love to f/up 98's. Get it checked out by your gun maker.

Love your calibre choice, the .318 can step up to big stuff in the hands of a cool marksman if required. My custom started as an FN like yours, I had a new bolt handle fitted & opted for reworked 1909 bottom metal to add a bit of nostalgia. I agree with my gunsmith who reckons pits etc. add to the character of a rifle....

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Though your Columbian Mauser is not a suitable donor for your "Tiger" rifle the receiver is still suitable for a rifle build as a "truck" gun.

As is the receiver will be stuck in a stock if you where to glass bed the rifle as the below wood pitting will lock it in place.

The receiver can be sandblasted and the pits then filled with an epoxy, like J. B. Weld. The sandblasting will give the metal "bite" to hold the epoxy. The epoxy is smoothed to the receiver contours. The receiver can the be spray finished with Gun-Kote, a baked on finish. The sandblasting of the recieve is also benefit in preparing the receiver for spray finishing.

You will be left with a tool grade receiver/rifle when finished but by no means and exhibition grade.

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Vlad - what level of heat is used for baking the Gun-Kote? I am curious that baking will not 'lift' or turn the epoxy to crumbly rotten plastic.
I have bedded a number of Mauser Mil actions with pock-marks and bad pitting below the wood line, but using AXLE grease for release agent, never ended up with a "Glu-In".

I agree, this action would make a "fine" truck rifle.

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Daryl S,

I have only read of the process I described and have plans (for the last seven to ten years, I don't recall exactly) to do this same thing so I may be talking out my ass. This process was used by several forum members of MauserCentral.com which has not been active since the days of the Turkish Mausers when they sold for five for $100.

Here is a link to Gun-Kote on Brownells http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-...h-prod1150.aspx

The instructions are two bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for one hour. My concern with the pits is that, even with a release agent, the bedding will fill in the pits and cause extraction issues like a pitted chamber causes convex dents in brass and extraction issues. I suppose that for the purposes of bedding clay could be used to fill the pits but then you are left with an ugly receiver.

As long as all pitting is below the wood line then the pitting will not ruin the esthetics of the rifle but that R.Famage/1952 is a real killer. I would have to see that covered up or removed some how and I don't think I would want to file it out as, I think, that the out of roundness would be quite visible.

Just my opinions and yours may vary quite much but then we all build rifles to suit ourselves.

Vlad

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Yes - I-too could handle the other stampings, but R-Framage is a nasty.

Filling with epoxy, smoothing then painting to make it all the same colour might be the only way.

300F is about where epoxies let go and fail, isn't it?

Dark blue or black Ceracoat certainly sounds like a good finish to get all surfaces to match in colour.

Press the button on the side and it will pop-up. You can use Talley or Burgess rings with no problem. The ZKK trigger contains more parts than a Cockoo clock and sometimes very crude in finish. I suggest a 1898 type action in good condition.

The commercial `98 actions are usually well priced on UG`s and later being enhanced with Recknagel safeties, after market triggers etc they are rock solid.

You get to keep the barrel and the stock for another one too!

I would rather have a Mayfair but at 4-5 large its a 'gulp' so the PH line are good enough and do the job too.
The 358 NM PH had no problem doing a couple yesterday but of course 'around the fire' its 'just a PH!

G'Day Fella's,

Thats the one NitroX!

I have a 1970 vintage ZKK 600 (Monte-Carlo stock version), in .338-O6, and it is a great set up.
The reason I suggested 1970 and before is, I have seen a few after this date, and they are as rough as!
FYI, the Soviets invaded the Czech Republic (or was it already Czechoslovakia, before the invasion?) in 1968.
The quality and finish of most of there firearms, went to the dogs after 1970ish.

The original 7x57 Brno barrel of this rifle was re-bored to .338" by (whats his name ? in Hahndorf, Sth Aust) and then re-chambered to .338-06 and screwed back in, by B H-C.
I have adjusted the Ghost Ring Peep (it is adjustable for both Windage and Elevation), for Hornady 250grn RN and the original iron rear sight, for Hornady 200grn Spire Pts. This took a bit of "Regulating" (via reloading) but is now reliably consistent.

FYI, with 250grn loads, the .338-06, is about 200ish fps, behind my .338 Win Mag (10 feet from the muzzle).

Hope that helps

Doh!

ZKKs with pop up peeps are getting hard to find in Australia and when found the complete gun is getting close to $1k remembering you are buying a stock and barrel which you do not want. Of course you could sell these and get some money back.
Personally I would go with an 09 Argy. While I love the ZKKs IMHO they are not pure Mauser actions. Something about that bolt release gets me in every time.

Daryl S,

Regarding epoxy cements and heat.

From , the J. B. Weld FAQ page:
"Original J-B Weld can withstand a constant temperature of 500º F. The maximum temperature threshold is approximately 600º F for a short term (10 minutes)." and "Because of the extreme temperatures of exhaust systems, we do not recommend J-B Weld for use on exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters. Nor do we recommend the product for repairs within the combustion chamber. However, in areas where the continuous temperature is less than 450º F, we do recommend our HighHeat epoxy putty stick.". Also "When fully cured, J-B Weld can only be removed by grinding or filing it off, or by directly heating the product above the 600º maximum temperature threshold.".

Speak of the devil a perfect candidate sold on UG today.
A 1975 ZKK600 in 7x57 with pop up peep sold for $400. Barrel was said to be useable but was being sold as action value only. They are out there.

Bugger,

My grand plan is actually a .318 WR and 7x57 takedown. If the barrel wasn't shot out could have been useful.

I must say I used to like the Brno ZKK's except for the ridiculous triggers. Then the chunky aweful badly finished CZ550's came out and lost all appeal.

G'Day Fella's,

NitroX, yes I know what you mean but they originally came with the Single-Set trigger and also, a conventional trigger as well. So many of the conventional triggers, seem to have been lost or are in draws in sheds and Gunshops!
So, if you know what you are looking for, and you can get into any Old Gunshop, you may be able to find one?

BTW, there is another 1974 ZKK 600, in 7x57 on www.usedguns.com.au but they want a $1,700.00 (AUD) for it!
Make em an offer for it and without the scope, and see what they say?

Regards
Homer

I liked $400 better.

A 4x Zeiss Diatal wouldn't go stray however. If the reticle was the right one.

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Couple of thoughts. A good man with a TIG welder should be able to fill the Farage lettering with weld along with other pits. It can then be taken back to clean surface. But as has been said elsewhere you will be better with a different action and many will already have a bent bolt handle etc. Those older Brnos are strong actions and the triggers can be changed out. Plenty of older Parker Hales and BSAs also have good actions, also early Sakos.

As for takedown, the best to my mind is the H&H style with a stock coming off. No issues with return to zero etc. A takedown with removable barrel takes a lot more work - and cost. And to my mind having two barrels is a compromise. A 7x57 should be a nice dainty little rifle, whereas a 318 needs a bit more meat in the stock etc to soak up the recoil. A 318 with a 7x57 barrel would just be wrong.

Vladymere - interesting. I did not know JB Weld was so heat

insensitive.

It does make good bedding compound.

Thanks for the good reply.

No I am not intending to go to that effort on this action. May sell it off seeing the sapolice don't like the number of firearms I have. No idea if I can replace it.

I would love to source a CZ action/rifle with an integral peep sight. And build a simple .318 on that to start off with. Later more modifications such as a custom stock from the blank.

I do think the CZ actions are a little chunky.

Haven't moved forward with this project. Shortage of funds.

Re: "Tiger" M98 rifle - need suggestions

Read my last post.

Also if I had $5000 to spend on this project, I would spend it on hunting and use an existing rifle for the hunts.

I'm also more likely to restock my second Mauser M03 (Alpine model) before doing this project. A classic stock on it would be nice.

I have thought of using this "tiger" stock for a restocking of the Mauser M03 in the future. But I think a good plainer stock is more appropriate. I may even have one already. Have to look in 'storage', and if it is appropriate. I know I have several two piece stocks in storage.

But I think ONE DAY I still would like this .318 WR "Tiger" rifle. It must be a mental disease.

I also really wish someone would make custom barrels for the Mauser M03!!! A 6.5x68, maybe a .318 WR, a .375 H&H Mag longer than they make now. Maybe a 8.5x63 instead of a .318 WR, which they also no longer list ....

I may travel sometimes on overseas trips, which are usually my wife's trips and I go along. The difference between off farm urban incomes and farm and vineyard income, ie minimal.

My projects will happen when I start doing off farm consulting and work again, which was supposed to be sought again ... about right now ... will see how the farce virus affects mid and high level finance work. Not sure. I doubt many will be spending anything. Unless the useless bastards in the jobs all NEED to "work at home". That's one of my intended marketing tools, I'm willing to turn up at offices. Doubt there will be anything going unless lucky or smaller projects. Farm and vineyard income is non existent. Work for nothing.

All this virus farce stuff and how businesses are facing months or even a year or no income ... sounds like normal agriculture, from year to year.

If there is some excess funds, I'm first going hunting. The hunting droughts have been way too long.
