Personally, I feel that the snake shaped bolt handle and croc + hippo squarebridges is taking it rather too far. And brings to mind that over-engraved Blaser doublerifle made for the UAE minister (Hamad?). Kind of like a rifle version of MTVs "Pimp my ride"...
But still, it's definately unusual and interesting.

Personally, I do not care for engraving of any sort, but i must admit that that hippo head looks cool! Exquisite work though

I'm also kind of a "less is more" type of guy. And thus, not a great fan of engraving. But I still enjoy admiring quality work, and the guns built by Hofer are certainly in that catagory!

That is incredible !!
I think simple ingraving is perfect, but..........the art in that rifle is the most beautiful I've every laid my eyes on.

As a rifle that thing is ugly and worthless. This is not something you throw behind the seat and take hunting. Can you imaginge cleaing the mud and dirt off that thing after a hunt. What a pain in the ass.
Now as a work of art and a demonstration of the engraver art, wow!!! The Lion Grip cap is awesome!
I have a rule about rifles and guns in general, if they can't be taken out and shot, I don't want them, I could make an exception to the rule...

I will not buy a rifle like that.
1) haven't got the money
2) I like working rifles
The bolt handle is a bit over done but for the rest the craftmanship is outstanding. For the collecter with enough money,this will be a fine exhibition piece.
Will I take a rifle like this one to the bush, a BIG NO.
The wood is very nice, oh that grain is just to good to look at.

I must agree with Jaco here. The rifle certainly had a lot of work put into it and it looks almost ornate, but whoever owns it would probably die of a heart attack from the fear of marking it while out hunting dangerous game and not from the quarry itself.
My friend John who signs in as MacNaughton on these forums had an incredibly beautiful SxS MAcNaughton bar in wood shotgun that he sold because he could not take the gun out hunting. It was so pretty after 100 years that he was always worried about something going wrong. I must say that he is a very wise man!
To my slim wallet and my eyes, this gun is something that I would not consider even if I won the Lotto.
Beautiful, but not for someone who likes shooting and hunting with guns, not merely admiring them in a cabinet or on a rack.| vapodog |

I have no clue what the pricetag is but of this I'm certain.....I can't afford it and I'm happy about that as that way someone that loves the art more than I do will own it.....but it's a very spectacular work of art!

I will see Peter at the SCI this January and will inquire as to what the price tag is on this Jewel....until then though, any guesses as to how much he wants for it?
just for the hell of it, post your best guess.
I will start the ball rolling,
$450,000 US and I think that that may be a tad low

I would have to guess roughly 650,000 USD. Considering that I have heard his doubles can reach over 1 million... This also may be a bit low.

I don't see how it could cost that much. The action, barrel and stock blank together would not cost more than $5K. Then the rest is the cost of labor forming and engraving the animals. Setting aside the formed bridges and bolt handle, I don't think the engraving could reach $100K. So would it cost $100 K for each of the square bridges and $100K for the bolt handle? I think that is extreme.
My estimate: $200K, and that includes a very hefty profit margin.

Personally I don't think the engraving is as good as on the High End Berettas. Take a look at the 455EELL's (http://www.beretta.com/index.aspx?m=74&idc=1&ids=59) I prefer a nice piece of fancy wood and deep blueing. If I was to get engraving I would want the best; and in my opinion that is from the Italians.
Still I'll have a guess and say $400,000 Euro.

P.S. Referance the 455EELL; I would guess that you could get one of those with the beautiful engraving and a set of matching 12 gauge barrels and still have change over, compared to the Peter Hofer rifle? IFFF I had the means, I know which one I'd prefer. I realise the original post was last year, but did anyone find out the asking price? And what prices do the 455's start at?
Just curious how much these exotic toys cost.

I have been drooling over Peter Hoffers rifles for a while. I wish that I could afford a couple or one!
I think it's great that Artist and master craftsmen exhist in this world that have such a high level of skill and that our Worldwide financial situation is good enough that someone is buying this stuff. Reminds me of Volkswagon's million dollar car.

Glad that this post was revitalized, I spoke to Peter several times at the SCI show and tis rifle was not there, and it seems that (albeit not clearly in his answer)that this rifle was sold,,,, I couldnt get the price as I thought it a rather crass question since it was already gone, had it been there and up for sale I would certainly have asked.

I too, like "working" rifles, and not too much engraving, if any.
I think some of the most beautiful "to my eyes" anyway, rifles, are those with no engraving whatsoever, only with the basics for DGR's. They wear better, and once they lose a little blueing, they have just as much "class" as any one of these highly adorned models do.
That said, IF, and a big IF, I had the chance to own this rifle, I WOULD use it frequently, instead of safeguarding it. Life is short, and there is only one life guaranteed to us, so why not? You can't take these things with you when you die, or so they say. But, again, I'd just as soon have a work gun any day.
On another note that caught me in the description: .500 jeffery-most powerful bolt action? hehe-thats funny.
