DORLEAC .275 Rigby Stalking Rifle

.275 Rigby stalking rifle: a new approach…

When a connoisseur and demanding customer asks that we reinterpret the famous .275 Rigby stalking rifle produced before the war while maintaining the style of our productions, it's a big challenge!
First of all, unlike modern productions, it is imperative to choose an intermediate 98 'Mauser action as they knew how to produce them in the twenties at Oberndorf.
Then, we can modify the trigger mechanism the classical way for a crisp single stage let off before forming an elegantly curved operating lever as on the old London productions of 43 Sackville Street.
It remains to machine a bolt peep sight regulated on the rear express sight and front caterpillar bead.
The stock, of well-seasoned old French walnut, will use a concealed recoil bolt and a trapped steel butt plate.
Here is the rifle now in the white, it has successfully passed the CIP proof test, and all that remains is some finishing touches and surface treatments before she departure for the Dark Continent or the Scottish moors…and still without optics!

Regards to all.

Joël, this rifle is really superb, nothing else to say!
One question however: is there a requirement from your lucky customer for scoping it? If yes, which mount: claw mount, side mount of the H&H type, other?

Louis,
The customer is a purist, he does not want a scope and wants to use this rifle only with iron sigths.
Needless to say, sighting must be performed with the utmost care.

Oh such a classic beauty..
Modern throwback to a golden age. So nice that the owner is purist enough to demand only iron sights.

Mmmm.. you had me at the tapered barrel!

Cant wait to see it blacked. Marvelous stuff!

I must ask though: is the flanged front sight ramp a copy of something original? Or is it "Dorleac Flair"!
Haven't seen one quite like that before, is all.

Purely DORLEAC, something to change from the too much encountered standard....

Re: DORLEAC .275 Rigby Stalking Rifle

it’s weird how Mr Dorleac captures the style of the pre-war Rigby better than the current rifles by John Rigby of London, without being slavish copies of them, if I had the money for such a rifle I know where I’d be spending it.

Damnation Joel. I want one just like that! Except not being a purist, with QD scope mount bases. A classic rifle, yet again.

I really like the resurgence of the 7x57/.275 Rigby. Once a cartridge chambering that was near death, written off as under-powered. But now seeing more and more rifles, the 7x57 is a true old classic, like the .30-06, 8x57 and .303. One should have one in each!

For goodness sakes, do not put optics on this rifle.

Beautiful rifle. I love that steel recoil lug and would love to know how you make sure there is a good with the action. Did you temporarily fix it to the action and then inlet both together?

Yes, indeed, it's the good way.
To inlet it perfectly, the recoil plate is firmly held between the action front bottom recoil wall and the upper part of the cylindrical guide at the front of the magazine box.
For a perfect cohesion this cylindrical guide through which passes the front screw has been modified and shortened by the exact thickness of the recoil plate.
It's binding to do but it's a pleasure to see the plate in place and to know that it fulfills his role correctly.
The screws come after the fitting, only to hold the part in place when dismantling...and also for the show !

Not just H&H. My pre-WW1 noname London proofed British Mauser in .375 Rimless NE aka 9.5x57 Mannlicher – Schoenauer has a very similar hidden recoil stop:

Re: DORLEAC .275 Rigby Stalking Rifle

Mr. DORLEAC,

I did a similar Mauser trigger modification, from the military two stage to a single stage. To do this, I put a small steel wedge in front of the front leg of the trigger finger piece, where you put that small leaf spring. Mine is not adjustable but tuned to my liking. Another thing I did is to add an after travel stop: inside the front returning spring cup, and inside the spring itself, I put a small steel cilinder, also adjusted very fine until the after travel suit my needs.
To prevent an accidental firing by pushing the trigger to the front, I put a small piece of steel in front of the trigger, inside the trigger guard.

Best regards

PH

Joel, beautiful rifle, very classic looking with a fantastic piece of wood. I also like the sling eyes which are the original type. Is the owner intending to use the original type sling hooks.

Fantastic rifle, doesn't get much better.

Re: DORLEAC .275 Rigby Stalking Rifle

John, Rigby were instrumental in implementing optics from a very early stage. Their 1901 catalogue offers the option of optics for their Mauser rifles but also for single shot rifles and doubles. So considering the Mauser 98 came out in 1898 and Rigby were offering optics by 1901 makes a Rigby rifle with optics pretty traditional.

At the BGRC here in Vic. there are at least five 275 Rigby's which are used in the Light Nitro Class and only one is not equipped with original factory bases which were fitted when the rifle was made.

I'll second that.

I know there are many, many highly-skilled craftsmen today who can produce excellent quality rifles, but there's something about a Dorleac that appeals to me like no other. I'll never be wealthy enough to be able to have a bespoke rifle made for me by a master gunmaker. However, the day after I win the lottery, I know whose door I shall be darkening, with a wall-to-wall stupid grin on my gormless face...

Every rifle you present to us on the forum is always exciting to see. Your Pictures are very professional as well, and show off the attention to detail in your work.

I love open sight rifles. They have a clean, purpose built look to them. Without a scope to cast a big shadow over everything, the stock and metal work is on full display. Open sight rifles carry so nicely, and hunting with them adds a challenge that I enjoy.

This rifle is outstanding, and may be my favorite rifle that you have built. Excellent work! Do show pictures of the final product after it's engraved and blued. As always, thank you for taking time to share with us!

best regards

Daryl, a couple years ago I stumbled across a stock of this style, Prince of Wales grip, but rack-grade wood, battered, and plastic buttplate. Only $40, and I needed a stock for Persian 98 project with a Shaw barrel, Timney, and peep sight. I bought the stock and set it aside.

Then we bought a house in Rossland BC, from the estate of an old-time hockey player, one of the world-champion 1939 Trail Smoke Eaters. Bit of a packrat.

Clearing out the garage, I scooped up a pile of old spark plugs and mixed in them was a pre-64 Winchester checkered steel buttplate! So now I have the makings of an $800 “poor man’s Rigby.” Except mine is a .257. Dyslexic I guess.

Dorleac’s is a treat to see. An inspiration.

I agree with your customer regarding a scope sight, which would only spoil the beautiful lines of the rifle. Comparing the lines of this rifle to images of original Rigby 275's, I believe the lines on this one are even slightly more elegant - maybe just a touch more wood removed.

It's a gorgeous rifle and it will look great in a gun rack in Scotland.
