DORLEAC ZG47 Take-Down Rifle
|
This light stalking rifle was produced according to our client specifications.
To build this takedown light rifle, chambered for the excellent .270 Winchester, we used a CZ ZG47 system.
Considered by many to be the ultimate evolution of the Mauser 98, this remarkable action was designed by engineer Otakar Galas for the Czechoslovak Zbrojovka and produced in 1947 under the name ZG [Zbrojovka Galas].
We opted for a "detachable stock" type takedown as used by H&H, the only easy disassembly solution guaranteeing headspace with absolute rigor.
To do this, the receiver has been modified accordingly while the stock supports the locking elements. After unscrewing the large captive screw at the front of the magazine, the barrel-receiver assembly is tilted to release it from the rear locking wedge and we obtain two elements of almost equal length, thus making it easier to transport the rifle.
To help with the disassembly, Jean-Baptiste Leveque has made a superb tool combining the excellence of execution with the practical ease of a folding screwdriver.
The barrel is a 24 "Lothar-Walther that carries slanted express rear sight and interchangeable front bead on ramp, the latter being a fine ivory caterpillar.
A fully concealed thread allows the use of a sound suppressor.
The stock made in good French walnut follows the classic lines distinctive of our productions.
There is little ornamentation on this rifle, more intended for the field than for the rack, but Florent Viale engraving is of extreme quality and compliments the few touches of bone and charcoal color case hardening.
All major metal parts have been slow rust blued and the walnut oil finished.
The scope is an old Swarovski Z3 - alas no longer produced - mounted on a set of modified Talley rings.

Wow that is some beautiful piece of work there again Mr D!
Can I inquire, does the ZG47 completely field strip down to individual pieces like the original Mauser?
Or does it only strip down into sections like the ZKK's.
I certainly do like the bolt sleeve & safety profile and the action dovetails certainly are a treat - no drilling!
I must say, to make it better could only be done by adding a ZKK pop up peep; now that would certainly add another level of complexity - if it was at all possible?
I understand that the milling of the peep was an extraordinary amount of work, as was the peep itself.
The takedown tool is a nifty piece as well, most definitely kept safe & sound in its gun case.
A very lucky man indeed is the owner of this extra fine piece of kit!

Not only can the ZG47 be dismantled in the same way as the Mauser 98, but the majority of the components are interchangeable.
However, the assembly screws are not threaded to the Whitworth standard but in metric ISO and unlike on the Oberndorf productions the magazine is a two parts affair.
The original finishes are slightly coarse and the whole requires a lot of attention to achieve the standard we are used to.
We can easily consider the addition of a small peep sight in the rear square bridge but, as I specify in the description, we meet the customer's requirements.
That said, many see the ZG47 as the culmination, the epitome of the development of the 98' Mauser action.

Absolutely stunning! I don't think I will be able to sleep now for a while - if I were to specify a rifle this would be it. I have long been dreaming of this style of take down rifle, for along time now, hence my post asking for examples of the take down method a few months ago.
For me an English man I really should think in terms of Westley Richards (an hour away) or H&H etc. However I would choose D&D the epitome of the craft. Maybe one day if I am lucky! Perhaps!

What an absolutely exquisite piece of work! The quality of your craftsmanship never ceases to impress, and I echo the sentiments of others who are very grateful that you take the time to supply us with such a comprehensive collection of excellent photos that explain so much of each rifle. In addition to the workmanship, I appreciate the clever little design details. On this one, for example, the discreet treatment of the suppressor threads: That easily could have spoiled the whole look of the rifle if it had ended up looking like it had been adapted from some "ball-cap gun" (meaning, assault rifle). Well done!

Beautiful work.
That rifle really checks the boxes for a classic.
One question: I noticed the front recoil lug under the rear site. In your experience, does that have any effect on accuracy?

Hello Mr. DORLEAC,
Beautiful is not enough. Your work improves the good, as usual. Agree about the H&H take down system, One of the best, in my opinion.
I miss by less than 24 hours, some 6 years ago, an almost unused ZG47 in 7x57 with the original scope mount and the original Meopta 3x20 riflescope. I am still kicking my back...
I like very much the general configuration of the ZG47 action, mainly the action body with the mount rails, the bolt, the sights, the trigger and the barrels they used. Anyway, the factory finish is not on par with the Pre II War military or sporting original Mausers.
My respects and admiration.

Very hard to improve on these looks. Take away the scope and add a full length leather case and, one could believe it had been stored, unused, in the basement of the Ritz for 100 years. (notwithstanding the dating of the action).

I don't have to be sold on the ZG-47. I own several of them. I like everything about them except for that safety. It works perfectly except for one little problem. The safety is "ON" in the forward position and "OFF" in the rear position, exactly the opposite of every other rifle or shotgun I have owned, except for my other BRNO's. My solution, which I don't much care for, is to install a Model 70 Winchester type bolt shroud and three position safety. I would rather keep the original one, if someone could only come up with a way of reversing the positions.
