Small ring Brno cartridge suitability

I know the 9.3x62 fits and that is what I am currently building one in but I got to thinking that I need as many rifles in a Brno small ring as I can get. Call it an obsession. The plans are for a .318 Westley Richards next once Pac-Nor gets up and running. What about the longer cases? Would an 8x68S or 9.3x64mm be possible?

Hello pacecars,

I think the shank diameter of the barrel and action of the BRNO small ring would be at the limit for these two cartridges. Not only because their case diameters, the 8x68 and the 9,3x64 are standardized at a rather high working and maximum allowed pressures.

Best!

PH

Thanks! Would probably want it a little heavier in those anyway

I have this feeling repeatedly. My bank manager manages to cure me of it whenever it arises. Sigh.

Re: Small ring Brno cartridge suitability

Brno small receiver ring model 98s, like the VZ 33, G33/40 Brno 21 & 22, post WW2 Husqvarna and VG 47 are stronger than people think. My rough country elk rifle is a .338 Winchester Magnum, 22” barrel, barrel band front ramp, folding rear on a pedestal, and has a Leupold 2x7 on it all in nice piece of Bastogne walnut. No problems with strength. Through WW2 German Mausers were built of differentially hardened 1090 type mild steel. Many other manufacturers had made the shift to better alloy steels like 4140. Note I’m not claiming G33/40s are made of 4140. But then again...

The small ring BRNO 98 is very strong in both commercial and military form. A friend has a G33/40 actioned custom sporter that is on its second 257 Weatherby barrel. The said action has not been Rehardened. The small shank design leaves plenty of metal in the front ring. The Czech’s had the best hardening process of any of the pre-war mausers. There are soft ones out there, but they are few and far between, especially after the mid 30’s.
